Sangkhlaburi is a town located on the border with Myanmar (formerly Burma). Due to its location, Sangkhlaburi has a huge migrant population made up of Burmese and Laotians. Sangkhlaburi is also home to many hill tribes. Immigrants from Myanmar, Laos and Thai Hill Tribe people are stateless, having no citizenship. This means they cannot get support from the Thai Government, have no access to education, medical relief and more. These are basic needs which are provided by volunteer organisations and NGOs. The volunteer work in Sangkhlaburi is diverse and extensive.
In December of 2012, I quit my job as a construction manager with a large company on the Sunshine Coast in Australia. As a way to de-stress, I decided to volunteer on a building project in Sangkhlaburi, Thailand run by the UK Starfish Asia Foundation. That decision ended up changing my life in ways that were totally unexpected.
That project was the D*R*E*A*M home. The current building has long outlived it's ability to meet the needs of the kids being housed there properly. As such, in January of 2012, Starfish purchased land nearby and started the construction of a new home that will not only meet the needs of the kids currently in care, but also be able to accommodate almost twice as many children in need.
All the costs for the construction of the new childrens home are covered through financial donations or volunteer labor. The time needed to complete the construction will be dependent on the the time taken for the funds to be raised. Time is short, the rainy season is about to start in Thailand and it is hoped that the construction of the majority of the buildings can be completed as soon as possible.
One thing I have learned in travelling though Thailand is that a little can go a very very long way. A small contribution towards this project will literally change the lives of the kids in care in ways that many would have a very hard time comprehending. I am asking you to help change a life...
What We Need & What You Get
Currently there are plans to build four sleeping dorms and the required out buildings to house the children. Each of the dorms will cost approximately $4000.00 US to construct.
My aim is to raise enough funds to pay for the material costs for two of those dorms, one for girls and one for boys. (Raising the needed funds for all four would be simply incredible!) Any funding raised above and beyond what is needed will go towards the costs of building the kitchen and toilet blocks.
Because of my experience in the building industry,I have been asked to stay on to organize and manage the construction of the new childrens home along with other projects that are in the planning stage. As such, I will be calling Sangkhlaburi my home for the next six months and will be able to keep everyone updated on the status of the construction.
The method of fund raising is simple. You can "buy" bricks that will be used in the construction of the dorm walls. Each brick will cost $10.00 US and once installed, will have your name and country of origin painted on its side. You will be able to remain a part of the experience forever. Photos of the dorms and name of donors will be posted on the facebook page I will be creating to keep everyone updated
(The actual walls will be constructed out of concrete and will include screen ventilation. Brick lines will be scribed into the wet concrete at the time of pouring and donors names will be added once the concrete dries)
You can purchase as many bricks as you want. Partner bricks ($20.00 US for two names) and Family/group Packs ($50.00 with up to six names) are also available. If you are feelling particularily generous, why not buy an entire wall ($1000.00 US)??
A donation of $4000.00 US will bring you the Dream House Perk!. UK Starfish Asia Foundation will provide a two week experience for you OR someone of your choice at any one of their projects in Sangkhlaburi, Surin or Chaing Mai. You can choose to experience the Elephant Conservation Project in Surin or Chaing Mai or see your donation at work by coming to Sanglkhlaburi for the building or child care project. In addition, as you will be paying for all of the material needed in the construction of the dorm, you will have the dorm named in your honour and a plaque with your name on it will be hung in the reception hall of the home when it is completed. (Items provided for will be as listed in the various projects - see links below. The costs associated with getting yourself to Bangkok for the start of the various projects will be your responsibility)
Information on the various projects can be found here:
Things that are normally taken for granted by many; a solid roof over our heads, protection from the elements, clean water, clean clothes, daily meals and a chance for an education are not something that can be guaranteed for children in this part of Thailand. The building of this new children's home will not only guarantee those things for the kids already in care, but also open up those possibilities to many others in the area. With your donation, you will ensure that a proper home will be available to a child who currently has none, or one woefully inadequate.
Other Ways You Can Help
If you are unable to "purchase"a brick at this time, you can still help this project by sharing this campaign with as many people as you can. Ask two friends to tell two friends...and so on. Many hands can make small work of something life changing.
You can share this campaign using the Indiegogo share tool or other social media such as Facebook or Twitter.
Thank you for sharing your time with me on this mission of the heart...
