Lost remotes + spilled beverages =
the CUPSY design project
A beverage support with legs that detach and can be connected in may ways to enable use on couches, beds, beaches, even pools and hot tubs.
First a little about us - Mark is a mechanical engineer with 25 years of experience designing complex communication systems used in military operations, and who also enjoys a good brewed beverage. Malu is a Human Resources manager who also enjoys a good glass of cabernet on the couch. We have started and run multiple companies over the last 19 years, and have compiled a group of excellent designers, production personnel, and related support resources necessary to make the CUPSY project successful.
The CUPSY was born on a wet couch during family movie night. I was holding my beverage and a piece of pizza while searching for the remote control somewhere in the blanket, when…. OOPS the drink spilled and everyone jumped up with wet pants! Sound familiar??
The CUPSY was born on this couch
“That’s it! “I declared – I am a mechanical engineer and can fix this! So off to the plastics shop where a flat piece of acrylic was turned into the CUPSY concept. When the family started fighting over who gets to use the plastic mockup, the light bulb went on - perhaps others have a beverage spilling and remote control losing problem - let’s start a company!
A friend created a computer model of the CUPSY and contacted a small group of friends who graciously provided design feedback over the last 6 months. These we affectionately started calling these friends the "CUPSY Nation". Once this Indegogo project is funded, you will be invited to join the CUPSY Nation on our website (www.cupsyme.com) where we will have festive photo/video contests, random giveaways, coupons and "Where's CUPSY" blog ramblings.
Since CUPSY is a new, recently patent pending, invention we initially created a short video to give the CUPSY Nation the idea/concept when we started the design process. Nostalgically, here is that first video - we hope you like the acting!
The engineering behind the CUPSY is simple – thin legs separate the beverage support body from the surrounding surface. This is important because the surrounding surface will transmit forces/movement to the beverage support – the more the force, the more the spill. HOWEVER – the slender CUPSY legs offer a very small surface area to transmit the couch forces, thus minimal force transfer = minimal beverage movement, and voila’ – no spills! Disclaimer - if you play tackle football on your couch, you will spill your drink ;)
Once we figured out the engineering behind the CUPSY concept, we thought about using it in other places such as while sick in bed, or relaxing on the beach, watching our son play soccer, on a picnic, or laying on the couch instead of sitting. From these thoughts, the removable and re-positionable slender legs were born.
Here is a fun short animation we made from the CAD model, which shows the CUPSY changing into different beverage support positions-
Using the removable legs you can connect them in many different positions which let the CUPSY to be placed between the couch cushions or pushed into beach sand, or placed between a box spring and mattress on the bed, or laid on top of a picnic blanket or bedspread, or even float in a pool or hot tub.
Relaxing with the CUPSY legs in the horizontal position -
CUPSY on the beach, with the legs vertical(also works for insertion between couch cushions -
The kids love their CUPSY beverage support -
CUPSY and soccer go well together -
Grandma loves reading with coffee in the CUPSY -
and for you wine lovers - CUPSY stemmed glassware supports -
And then, our favorite………after much research...... we came up with the FLOATSY legs – enabling use of the CUPSY in a hot tub or pool!!
Check out this video for a tongue in cheek illustration of your new stable place to hold all beverages, in addition to personal items such as remote controls, cell phones, eyeglasses, keys, etc!
Where are we now?
We have created multiple CAD solid models of the CUPSY and have gone through 4 machined prototypes, improving the design each time. Our latest prototype meets our functional and design standards, and is now ready for mold machining and production.
We chose polypropylene as the CUPSY material because it is used in rugged dive and camera cases, and will last for years.
Right now, we have been working with the plastic injection molder to ensure the solid model is moldable, and will not create molding problems. They have assured us the latest CUPSY design is easily injection molded and can be produced once the steel molds are machined.
Thus, we are ready to go – we just need your support to get the molds machined, then you will be relaxing without spilling – the true CUPSY mission! Once this project is funded, we will be immediately making the molds, and off for production in April, with anticipate reward deliveries in May - just in time for Fathers Day.
......and.... put our Indegogo Founders Party “CupsyCon” on your calendar - we will be throwing a rager here in Ft. Collins to celebrate moving CUPSY into the production phase. We are working with local brewers, coffee roasters, and tea blenders to create special CUPSY commemorative beverages for the party, will be highlighting local bands and chefs, and will have a few surprises perfected at our previous 4th of July and New Year’s parties!!
Now I See, CUPSY Me!
Thank you for your support!
