UPDATE - Mixing Competition Results
During this campaign we had a mixing competition going on from the band Pictures From Eden. The results are in and we wanted to show you all the amazing difference our engineers can do with raw recordings.
We've uploaded a quick snippet of a before and after soundbyte so you can listen to how the song changes from the original raw recordings to the professionally produced mix from the winner.
If the player doesn't show up on your device, click here to listen to it on Soundcloud.
If you dig the song as much as we do you might want to listen to the whole gloriously mixed masterpiece right here.
And here's what the band had to say:
Our vision is to allow musicians and audio engineers to focus on their passions: music and audio.
There are more than 3.2 million musicians in need of the professional services that over 300,000 audio engineers provide. Currently, musicians have to search around their home towns and sift through thousands of solo engineer’s websites just to locate a suitable engineer. They then have to put their faith in that one person to deliver the sound they're looking for.
We offer an alternative to expensive recording studios. Crowd Audio brings musicians and audio engineers from around the world together by connecting home studios, creating a community where musicians and audio engineers collaborate and support each other in creating professional quality music.
Step 1 - Musician uploads their raw recording to Crowd Audio and provides description of how he/she would like the song to sound along with the prize money offered to the winning engineer.
Step 2 - Audio engineers from around the world compete. Mixing/mastering the musician's song and submitting their mix for review. The musician then selects three finalists and provides feedback for a final round of mixing.
Step 3 - Musician selects the winning mix. The prize money is awarded to the winning engineer and the professionally mixed song is returned to the musician.
Step 4 - Showcase your professionally mixed song to the world! Post it on your website, soundcloud, reverbnation and anywhere else you connect with fans.
Benefits to Musicians
1. Receive multiple mixes and get the perfect sound for your music.
2. Empower fans. Have them help decide the winning mix.
3. Save time searching for quality engineers. Let them come to you.
4. Get a mix you love, guaranteed.
Benefits to Audio Engineers
1. Earn money mixing music.
2. Grow your portfolio and gain credibility.
3. Fill down studio time.
4. Collaborate and learn new skills from experienced engineers.
5. Stay on top of your game by competing.
What does mixing do?
Professional mixing takes the individual recordings of the instruments, like guitar, drums and vocals and mixes them together using complicated processors like EQ, compression, reverb and effects. By mixing all the tracks together in this way you end up with a professional sounding product.
Think of the raw recordings as a sketch and the professionally mixed product as the Mona Lisa.
The Long Wait, a band from Tucson hosted a competition on Crowd Audio and received submissions from over 30 audio engineers around the world!
Germany, Canada, USA, U.K. and Spain, to name a few.
As you listen to the song below notice how it starts with the raw recording from the band and then switches at 0:14 to the professional mix from the winning audio engineer.
This back and forth continues throughout the song and highlights how professional mixing can drastically improve the quality of a recording.
If you are interested, here are some more winning mixes from past competitions.
Musicians don't always have the money to fund the costs of producing a song, EP, or album. Crowd Audio is here to help them.
Musicians in need of money for a mixing project can fanfund their competition on Crowd Audio. They set a funding goal for their competition and offer exclusive rewards for their supporters.
Then all there is to do is rally the troops! Musicians share their competition and funding goal with family, friends, fans and their communities. Once the goal is reached the competition goes live and is visible to audio engineers who can then compete.
One of the most important aspects of Crowd Audio is to develop supportive and educational communities for both audio engineers and musicians.
Audio engineers can collaborate and share the best practices of their success. They will have access to exclusive interviews with winning engineers, showcasing the techniques behind their successful mix. Ebooks, blogs, forums and other educational materials will also be available for engineers spurring creativity, increasing their knowledge, and improving their skills.
Musicians will also have access to educational materials focusing on recording, promoting themselves, recommendations on equipment, recording studios nearby and many other issues that musicians face. There will also be interviews and write ups on selected groups showcasing their music to the community.
Hi, my name is Björgvin Benediktsson (middle) - I am a sound engineer with a diploma in audio engineering from the SAE Institute, Madrid. I've also been a musician for over 10 years and have worked in the music industry since 2006. I write articles, tutorials and eBooks on audio production for online publications such as Audiotuts+ as well as trade magazines such as MusicTech Magazine. Since 2009 I've blogged about audio on my website Audio Issues, giving practical production tips to home recordists. I've released a number of eBooks through my website and wrote a book for Rockable Press called "How to Record Music…With Whatever Equipment You Got." I'm a passionate musician and audio engineer and I believe in giving everyone a better chance of making their music sound awesome.
Oy! My name is Alexander von Bieberstein (left) - Growing up in Germany and the United States has provided me with a diverse connection of friends throughout the world. Over the past decade, I have spent countless weeks and months traveling and exploring the unknown places that my friends now call home. Being on the road has always left me with plenty of hours to find and listen to great music. It wasn't until I met the Crowd Audio team that I realized the importance an audio engineer plays in making your music sound excellent. I love to see how these audio engineers really bring songs to life.I'm an aspiring entrepreneur, artist and music enthusiast.
Hello! My name is Christopher Fraioli (right) - I am originally from New York and spent most of my youth studying piano, drums and ceramics. I recently graduated from the University of Arizona and have forgone getting a traditional job to create a business that I'm passionate about and allows me to make a difference. Music and art are my passions in life and I'm grateful to be doing something I love. Thank you for checking out our campaign and helping us bring Crowd Audio to fruition!
Our community has grown to over 600 musicians and audio engineers over the past six months. Eight musicians have hosted mixing competitions on Crowd Audio receiving over 100 total submissions from audio engineers.
In March we competed at Pitch Day Arizona, a "Shark Tank" esque pitch competition held in Scottsdale. Twelve entrepreneurship teams from UofA, NAU, and ASU went head to head in front of a panel of investors. We won first place out of the UofA teams and took home seed funding to get Crowd Audio started.
We are currently working out of a collaborative workplace called the HIVE. It is located in downtown Tucson's Historic Warehouse Arts District which is a hotbed for start ups and innovative businesses. Recently Entrepreneur magazine ranked Tucson in their top five cities for entrepreneurs.
We have taken the website as far as we can on our own. Currently, the competition process is completely manual on both the musicians/audio engineers and us, creating a significant bottleneck.
The new website will be fully automated making the process more user friendly and scaleable. Now is the time to bring in a professional developer so that we can shift our focus from setting up competitions to building relationships with musicians and audio engineers, allowing us to create the best community we can for them.
A portion of the funding will also be going towards marketing. Up to this point we have been marketing solely by word of mouth and leveraging our personal networks.
With a marketing budget we will be able to raise awareness about Crowd Audio to musicians and audio engineers around the globe.
What if we don't reach our goal?
Whether we reach our goal, fall short or far exceed it, all of the money we raise will be going directly towards developing Crowd Audio. The perks we are offering will be fulfilled to all of our generous supporters.
However, without reaching our goal it will make it significantly harder for us to create an effective platform that has all the functions our community has asked us for. Support us today so we can create the music marketplace for tomorrow.
We are passionate about making Crowd Audio accessible to thousands of musicians and audio engineers and will stop at nothing to accomplish this. Crowd Audio is a great opportunity for the audio community and it's our mission to spread the word and make a difference.
How else can you help?
We appreciate any support you can give in helping us get our message out to the audio community.
Please share our campaign with family, friends, and anyone else in your network that might be interested. Indiegogo has made this simple for you with their "share tools".
Thank you for your support and for helping us create better music through community!!!
