Who We Are
Conspiracy of Venus is a 30-woman vocal ensemble based in San Francisco, CA that explores the creative frontiers of music under the artistic direction of Joyce Todd McBride. We interpret Joyce’s daring and inventive arrangements of beloved songs, ranging from popular classics (Joni Mitchell’s "Big Yellow Taxi" and David Bowie’s "Life On Mars") to edgy contemporary pieces (Bjork’s "Possibly Maybe"), as well as original compositions by Joyce with dazzling technical verve and tons of personality. Drawing inspiration from medieval music, jazz, funk, and new music, Conspiracy of Venus takes vocal music into territories not explored by more traditional choirs or college-style a cappella groups (though we are also inspired by them!).
Conspiracy of Venus speaks out through our music about political issues from feminism to environmentalism. Our newest composition puts “The Buddha’s Parable of the Burning House,” a poem by Bertolt Brecht set to music by Joyce, into the context of the global discussion on climate change. We believe that there is meaning behind the music we make, and we strive to share that with the world.
Sometimes singing is like extreme spelunking, and sometimes it’s like outer space exploration. We take seriously the idea that change and growth happens through the process of meeting each week and working really hard. We are ready to share our hard work with the world by recording an album.
Music Matters: the Project
Conspiracy of Venus is preparing to record a 9-song album with producer Lolly Lewis at Coast Recorders Studios in San Francisco. Live recordings, while capturing the energy and spontaneity of our performances, don’t pick up the subtle, beautiful details and the delicate balance of parts in Joyce’s arrangements. We have made multiple live recordings during our 7-year history, and we are ready to take it to the next level with a professionally produced studio album.
What We Need and What We Want to Share With You in Return
By contributing to our campaign, you will make it possible for us to create a recording that will represent the creative exploration of our first 7 years and provide a leaping off point for our future growth as an ensemble. The recording will also allow us to share our music outside the Bay Area.
$20,000 will allow us to record a full length album. Each song costs aproximately $2,500 to record, including studio time, technician fees, musician fees, and purchasing rights to the songs. If we don't meet our full funding goal, we'll record as many songs as we can afford to. And if we raise more than our goal, the album will be longer!
To show our gratitude for your contribution to our campaign, we're offering a variety of gifts (perks!), from a digital download of the album to T-shirts to services by our talented members... even a private concert by Conspiracy of Venus!
Support our unique, original wildness and grace; support Conspiracy of Venus!
Your contribution will allow this vibrant non-profit arts organization to stay off the beaten track and continue charting new territory in the world of song. Your contribution affirms the idea that music is vital to our culture and community during a time when government funding for the arts is at an all-time low; that women’s voices are valued and deserve to be heard; that artists can and should take risks by fearlessly exploring new terrain. All donations will be processed through our brother choir, Conspiracy of Beards, a 501c3 tax exempt organization (which means your donation is tax deductible!).
We have been performing to sold-out audiences in large and small venues around the Bay Area for over seven years, delighting, thrilling, inspiring, and entertaining our fans.
Conspiracy of Venus believes that creating and sharing music has social and political impact, and we are active in community service. We have performed at Dublin State Correctional Facility and have played numerous benefits, lending our voices in support of causes from elementary education to fair trade for women to endangered species protection. Your contribution will allow us to deepen our impact on our community.
Can't make a Contribution?
Even if you can't donate funds you can still support women’s voices. The more you can help people see and hear about us the more power we will have to reach out. Spread the word!
