Wait. Who are The Wandering Fools?

The Wandering Fools began in a simple black box in the basement of the Schapiro Theatre. It was there that we first began to explore Bertolt Brecht's Caucasian Chalk Circle, an epic tale of revolution, love, and morality. Not knowing where this would lead us, we collaborated and experimented together as an ensemble to tell a story about a young kitchenmaid and an unorthodox judge in a time of civil unrest. Our adventurous wandering with this play has led us to an invitation to perform at The Shanghai International Experimental Theatre Festival and share our findings with an international audience.

And why do you Fools need money?

The festival is generously providing the venue, crew, marketing, meals and lodging for the ensemble - basically EVERYTHING - once we are in China, however we need YOUR help to raise the money for our airfare. Plane tickets to Shanghai on average cost $1000 per person and our team consists of 10 lovely wandering fools, which makes a grand total of $10,000.

So what's the show about?

Caucasian Chalk Circle centers around two main characters, a young kitchenmaid, Grusha and a strange county clerk turned judge, Azdak. The eternal do gooder, Grusha takes on a huge risk to save the recently beheaded governor’s infant son while Azdak contemplates and philosophizes on class, corruption, judgment, and right and wrong. What do these two seemingly different people have in common? On the surface nothing, but at their core Brecht uses them both to brilliantly cast a light on the complex and sometimes strange aspects of the human spirit. Caucasian Chalk Circle takes a close look at humanity and all of its intricacies. It takes a fair look at the positive and the negative, the strengths and the weaknesses, the just and the unjust. As an ensemble we strive to tell this intricate story with truth and simplicity, oh and some rope and buckets.

You keep using the word ENSEMBLE...

To work as an ensemble is one of the most difficult and most rewarding experiences an artist can face. Together we band as one to produce a single effect. It is incredible to watch and thrilling to experience. We learn so much from each other, about each other and how to work with each other both on and off stage. How to communicate artistically and personally becomes an art form in itself. As an ensemble we have become so synced with each other that rehearsals never seemed like work, because there was such an open dialogue between actor, director, producer, designer, and dramaturg. Many times our director would propose a question or problem and as an ensemble we delightfully and sometimes painstakingly create solutions together.

We hope that you can be our solution for Shanghai and help us if not monetarily, help us spread the word and share this Indie GO GO campaign with friends, family, strangers and theatre lovers around the world.

a dance with light and rocks

Hailed as "a work of art" by Anne Bogart, this fresh rendering of Caucasian Chalk Circle features an ensemble of six virtuosic performers with all original music. Brecht's epic tells the story of Grusha, the peasant girl who unwittingly becomes a mother, and Azdak, the drunken fool who becomes a judge, looking deeply into the constructs of society through the art of transformation. With simple elements -- buckets, burlap, rope, and a single rock --the players transform a thousandfold, contemplating and embodying the thousand faces of humanity in times of violent turmoil. Accompanied with mandolin and concertina, the ensemble tells a stirring tale that Niky Wolcz called: "simple, deep, profound work that would have made Brecht happy...and he was rarely so."
