In the scheme of human history, filmmaking is still a very young art form but it's proven a powerful means of storytelling — a form of expression as old as mankind.

A group of Farmington Valley based filmmakers, actors and enthusiasts have now started an effort to help cancer survivors tell their own stories by recording, producing and editing movies, whether it's for a family and friends or a wider audience. We are seven individuals whose lives were changed forever by three words, "you have cancer". We are survivors and caregivers who are now dedicated to the fight against cancer.

As a non-profit organization it is our mission to provide financial assistance to those families with members battling cancer, providing jobs and pride through creative arts, as well as offering workshops and classes to students with cancer in the art of filmmaking.

By collaborating with various non-profits organizations nationwide,  our goal is to  extend CSWC’s mission of improving quality of life for cancer patients and their families by providing financial assistance from the proceeds of various movies generated/created/ produced by Atlantian Films, successful  fundraising, patient advocacy, counseling, film art therapy and education.  While research is imperative to finding a cure for this devastating disease, the objective is to shed light on an equally important part of the fight: the critical day to day survival needs of patients as they undergo treatment and the potential life changing effects of having cancer.  CSWC Foundation completes the circle of care for patients by providing help and offering hope to meet those needs.

Our goal is to create a film school for cancer survivors and care givers.  The school will give individuals a purpose, a project to work on, create a positive and supportive environment for those who are undergoing treatment and an opportunity to share their story with other survivors and care givers.

Workshops will be limited to 12 persons or less, providing an intimate hands-on learning experience. Instructors are locally-based, practicing filmmakers and artists looking to share their years of knowledge and experience as volunteers. Workshop materials; acting, directing, script writing, film stock, film processing, editing equipment, budgeting, sound design, crew,  HD video transfer of finished work and online hosting of their finished film are all inclusive. At the end of each workshop there is a FREE public screening open to the participant and their friends.

While every student in the program will have the opportunity to write and direct his or her own film, it is important that students realize that film making is a collaborative art.  Students form three or four person crews and gain invaluable hands on experience rotating in the principal production positions on the set of Atlantian Films movie “Mindscapes”:
• Director’s Assistant
• Production Assistant
• Assistant Camera
• Gaffer/Grip
• Prop Assistant
• Wardrobe Assistant

By getting behind the camera as a cinematographer, students train their eyes for composition and learn to respect the difficulties of setting up a shot. Similarly, by working as a gaffer and taking responsibility for the lights, they practice how light and shadow affects the film. By working in the various crew positions students gain empathy and respect for their crews, this is essential for successful work as a director.

Funding will be used towards the purchase of computers, film editing software and help pay for the development of a website.

Cancer Survivors Who Can Charities, Inc is  a non for profit organization registered in the State of Connecticut.  We have applied for our 501(c)(3) and awaiting approval from the IRS.
