Welcome.

My name is Max Carmack and Lacuna Studios is a freelance recording studio that I have meticulously assembled over my entire music career. My involvement with the Long Island Music Scene has brought to light this striking realization:

There is a major problem with the music industry.

Successful musicians don't get paid

...and good musicians rarely find recognition.

  • They are scammed by the greed of major labels

                                                OR

  • They can't avoid the high prices of production

We want to change that.

IF YOU WANT TO RECORD:

SEND US AN E-MAIL AT

LACUNASTUDIOSNY@GMAIL.COM

IF NONE OF THE TIERS SUIT YOU, WE WILL WORK TOGETHER TO CREATE A CUSTOM PACKAGE THAT WORKS FOR YOU AND YOUR GROUP!!

Lacuna Studios is going to be a fully-fledged production company. We want to do everything: record and produce records, put on live shows, manage, film videos, ect. all while putting time and effort into your work. Caring about it like our own.

And we're going to make it affordable.

The Impact

The basis of music is communication.

  • We are passionate about communicating feelings and thoughts through music
  • We value this mode of communication
  • We want to provide opportunities for others to express themselves musically in a professional way

  • We want to make it easier for musicians to do what they love.
  • We want to make it easier for them to be heard.

Project rates and low prices will make our studio very friendly to people's wallets while offering studio quality worth many times it's price.

What's in it for you?

Every bit of support will make a huge difference.

Not only to us- but every band that ever works with Lacuna Studios.

You can help simply by sharing our project to anyone who might be interested:

Friends, brothers, mothers, lovers, lovers of music, dads, sisters, cousins, tell your dog!

Everyone that donates will be thanked personally by one of us. If you donate $25, we'll write you a handwritten letter!

The more you donate, the more you can get.

  • Free copies of Lacuna releases.
  • T-shirts
  • Studio Time
  • Feeling great
  • Helping promote the frontier of music creation on Long Island

Multiple artists are going to collaborate on our 'Lacuna Backers' wall, which will feature some backers' names with music-related illustrations. Backers can also get their name on a special sleeve right inside one of our first major releases.

The Past

Lacuna was born about three years ago when I started recording bands in the basement of my home in Syosset, NY.

Basement Studio - Lacuna Studios

I gained a lot of experience recording, producing and writing in the basement studio:

...but now I'm ready to take it to the next level.

The Present

In September of this year, I secured a location in Bellmore, NY

Front Office - Lacuna Studios

I have access to a garage (live room + control room) and a storefront for band liaison, conferences, delicate instruments, and logistics.

Lacuna is an infinitely diverse studio. So far, I have produced and written music for a full rap album, and produced multiple local bands. Lacuna will record everything from cabaret jazz trios to screaming metal bands. It's all music to us, and it's all fun.

The Dream

In the future, Lacuna will consist of several branches, all aimed at helping bands- a full suite that can gather fans, release music, book shows, promote, make music videos and even design merchandise/art/websites.

The vision for Lacuna is massive, almost infinte. We are young, motivated college students, floating in a universe of ideas and stimulated by our enriching surroundings. We want to take the creation of music to the next level, and change the music scene around us by making the bridge between music makers and music lovers shorter, clearer and easier to travel.

  • no big business

  • better the music scene of Long Island

  • budget recording projects

  • a label, a record company, a management suite that actually cares

We want to take a garage and completely retrofit it into a state of the art recording studio. The structure is already framed, and the insulation is installed.

What's next?

We'll have to split the garage into two parts- the live room (where the musicians will be recorded) and the control room (where the engineer mixes and produces). In order to achieve this, we will build a wall separating the room in half. This wall will be framed on a 2x6 with staggered studs, along with two adjacent doors providing for optimal acoustic isolation. Built into this wall will be a four paned, soundproof window for communication between the musician and the engineer.

Sound Isolation Cross Section - Lacuna Studios

How will the money be spent?

Building a pro studio from scratch is like reinventing the internal combustion engine. Like each belt and piston, every aspect of the studio has to work in perfect harmony to accomplish a single goal. Achieving that goal requires immense amounts of planning, skill, precision and experience. Also some money.

Welllllllll- a lot of money, but every cent is necessary to our success. The proposed budget will lift us off the ground, but get us nowhere near where we want to be.

First, we have to soundproof the space. (we are in a residential area)

Soundproofing Estimate

Here is an estimate for basic soundproofing materials totaling at $3,052. The more money we have, the better we can soundproof and treat the space. This estimate does not include bass traps, or any of the acoustic modifiers that will be required to control reflection, diffusion, echo, and reverberation. Spending more cash here will lead to a better sounding room which means clear, punchy sound that feels real- it also means less sound will leak out (and in) to the studio. This will allow us to record at all hours; through sleeping neighbors, thunderstorms, and rush hour alike.

Second, we have to furnish the space. This includes light fixtures, switches, HVAC, carpets, wiring, paint, desks, guitar stands, chairs, ventilation- and most importantly, camera and locking security systems. The more we spend on furnishing Lacuna, the better it will look, lock, & feel.

Third: I'd like to have professional quality instruments at the studio for clients to record with. Amps, guitars, basses, keyboards, drums, ect. If we raise enough, I would even like to buy some non-western instruments (sitar, kobuz, dilatr) to offer to our clients. The recording signal chain begins with the musician. Directly after that comes the instrument. Low-quality instruments can steal the shine from even multi-million dollar studio productions, and Lacuna's mission is to make that great sound accessible to everyone.

Last, but definitely not least is recording gear. This is the basis of our operation and every cent counts. There is a limit to how much quality you can get with hobby level gear. Undoubtedly, there can be artistic quality in using lesser equipment, and I understand that more than most. That's something that will never die at Lacuna. Raw sounding recordings are great. BUT, for that polished sound that many higher profile clients are searching for, it becomes a function of quality to money spent.

Quality Graph - Lacuna Studios

More money means transparent analog/digital conversion, better (or even vintage!) outboard gear (compressors, equalizers, limiters, effects, ect.), cleaner preamps, more accurate microphones, higher quality cables (we're going to build cables ourselves to save money), and of course a better console (mixing desk).

ALL MY SAVINGS are going into this studio. I'm paying for the bare building costs, working two jobs to pay rent, and spending every spare hour planning and making calls to get the ball rolling on this massive project. It's something that I've spent many hours daydreaming about, but getting this close is unlike anything I've experienced before.

The Team:

Lacuna Studios would not be possible without my talented, diverse and dedicated build crew. Several carpenters will aid in framing, construction and leveling. Blueprints were forged by a volunteer architect, and an Acoustic Designer from Akustiks, LLC has created a detailed drawing of the soundproofing plans (which I am not able to post, due to it being intellectual property). A civil engineer is also on the team, helping us maintain the structural integrity of the garage through construction. Besides these professionals, there is a devoted crew of fellow students and friends willing to work with me- volunteering their time and labor to help Lacuna open its doors. They're just as passionate about music as I am, and this studio is going to be an amazing learning experience for all of us.

THIS WOULD NOT HAPPEN WITHOUT YOU GUYS. THANK YOU.

Here are some work samples from Lacuna's future recording staff:

Robert Joseph:

helped direct this video, and sings lead vocals in Men Like Gods.

Joseph Kickbush:

is a self taught musician and producer, he's worked with artists such as Patrice LGTR. Joseph produced music for and helped direct the videos below:
