Kids at Risk
Cambodia is a tough place to be a kid. Decades of conflict, displacement and unspeakable violence have shredded the services and protections that are supposed to help keep children safe. Thousands of families are living in extreme poverty in the toughest slums of the capital Phnom Penh, many of them having lost their farms and land.
Few of the children attend school. Many are runaways and orphans living on the street who are lured into gangs, crime and drug abuse. Many are HIV-positive. And many fall victim to trafficking, abuse and sexual exploitation at the hands of adult predators.
What we are doing about it
PROTECT (a program of Global Humanitaria) has been working in Cambodia for 10 years, helping to rescue kids from the hands of sexual predators, providing shelter, medical care and legal assistance, and finding safe homes for them where they can begin to rebuild their lives. PROTECT works in the following ways:
PREVENTION OF CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE THROUGH EDUCATION IN THE STREETS
CARE AND SUPPORT TO VICTIMS THROUGH THE RECOVERY PROCESS
ASSISTING LAW ENFORCEMENT TO HELP BRING OFFENDER TO JUSTICE
Join Ami James and become a PROTECTOR
Tattoo artist Ami James, of New York Ink and Miami Ink, has become a Protector joining Global Humanitaria in the fight against child sexual exploitation. You can become a Protector, too. Help us build the "Bunni and Som House" in Andong, Cambodia. This shelter is dedicated to two of the child victims rescued by Global Humanitaria's Protect team in Cambodia, and will help provide safe alternatives to children and teens who might otherwise fall victim to sexual abuse and exploitation.
Our current shelter can only accommodate 29
children. In one small building; 13 girls share 4 beds. The walls and roof are made of
corrugated metal, which traps the tropical heat and makes the buildings
