Short SummaryI am one of the winners of the Knight Arts Challenge Detroit 2013, for this idea to run the ice cream truck around town playing classical music (specifically Bruckner's March in E-flat, but also a few other pieces) and selling ice cream for 26 Fridays: one Friday this year and then 25 Fridays roughly from April to October 2014. The Knight challenge grants are matching grants. So I need to raise from other sources half the money for the first ride and then Knight will match the other half.
What We Need & What You Get
Essentially the money is an assurance of profit for the ice cream truck operator. Maybe next year I will have my own truck, but this year I'm using someone else's. On a hot summer day, an operator expects to make $400. So that's what most of the $500 is for. Break it down for folks in more detail: The rest is for other expenses, like perhaps a cable to connect an MP3 player to the truck's sound system, maybe for gas.
I also need there to be one not cold Friday left this year, but that's not under anyone's direct control. Though due to climate change, it's very likely there will be a very warm Friday in November and maybe even December.
Because of the Knight match, I actually only need to raise $250 for the first ride. But if I raise more than what I need for the first ride, those funds can be saved up for next year's rides.
If you live in Corktown, Midtown or downtown, you might get to hear the ice cream truck's first ride. Other neighborhoods will be covered next year.
This will bring classical music to all of Detroit's neighborhoods in a fresh and unexpected way. Next year I plan to go to every neighborhood plus Belle Isle. This year the first ride route will necessarily be limited, but it will create awareness to raise the funds for the match for next year's rides.
Other Ways You Can Help
You can also help by getting the word out about this project, using Indiegogo's share tools.Marching bands can help by recording Bruckner's March in E-flat major, Kéler Béla, Apollo March or Michael Haydn's Turkish March and making the recordings available on IMSLP.
Composers can help by writing a march in E-flat major using the exact same instrumentation and form as Kéler Béla, Apollo March and making the score available on IMSLP.
