Brownie In Motion is a traveling art installation, photographic darkroom, and functioning camera obscura modeled after an iconic Kodak Brownie. Each donation to this campaign helps bring the camera obscura across the United States and supports an important portrait project that turns the camera lens on artisans and craftspeople whose niche skills are on the verge of disappearing.
What We Need & What You GetWe need to raise $10,000 to buy equipment, photographic supplies (film & paper) and pay for travel expenses (gas, tolls, food, lodging) while photographing artisans across the American west with the camera obscura. We are continually refining our onsite development system and need cash to build a cart that can double both as an equipment dolly and a darkroom sink. We also need to update some of our lighting equipment to help us expose images in the camera obscura when lighting conditions are less than ideal.
In particular, we are hoping to purchase the following pieces of lighting gear:
4800 w/s power pack and heads x 2
C-Stands with extension arms x 2
Travel Battery & Case
By donating to Brownie in Motion, you not only get the peace of mind that comes with supporting a historically significant photographic project but you can also get some pretty cool rewards, like limited edition prints, postcards, a private workshop or the chance to have the world's largest Brownie camera appear at your event as a photo-booth!
Through the photographic process, we hope to preserve pieces of our cultural history and perhaps generate an interest in crafts at the risk of being lost. Through public outreach events, Brownie In Motion helps facilitate dialogue about art, science, craft and making.
