Please help my first graders meet Jose Hernandez. By meeting a Latino astronaut we are giving my students a chance to see themselves in the future.

My name is Victoria Ramirez and I am a 1st grade bilingual teacher at Voices Charter School in San Jose. Voices Charter School is a high performing dual immersion school that serves many first generation students in south San Jose. We keep our goals and standards high for our students so that they can be at par with their wealthy and high performing counterparts.

I am also a 2011 corps member of Teach For America. As a member of Teach For America, I have a mission to help close the education gap for low-income students. I do so through teaching rigorous standards and creating a culture of respect and self-advocacy in my classroom among my 6 and 7 year olds. I make content available to all different types of learners especially as I have a cluster class. My cluster class has many students who receive special services to help them meet their needs.

I am looking for funding because Astronaut and engineer Jose Hernandez has agreed to come to school after many letters and requests. I believe that this opportunity is priceless for my students. Most of my students are first generation and from low-income families. My classroom is themed with an emphasis on UC Berkeley to introduce the idea of college and encourage studying beyond high school. Our school lacks in the sciences and so our classroom as tried to make up for it by creating an environment of space and science. My students are extremely invested in learning about space and view Jose Hernandez as a movie star.

By meeting a Latino astronaut we are giving my students a chance to see themselves in the future. His story of hard work and perseverance will resonate with my students and show them that querer es poder. Many of my students struggle on a daily basis with different issues whether at home or at school. Having a chance to see that there is hope and opportunity can help motivate them as well as create a lasting memory. This is a priceless opportunity to have students meet someone that they have only dreamed of. Please help me make this a reality.

Jose Hernandez is asking for $2,500 to help him cover his traveling costs and a small honorarium. He has lowered his price dramatically so we could have the chance to meet him.
