We’re not just a team, we’re on a mission.
Getting to Ladies Army.
We’re asking you to help us with the first phase of our project: to get us to Ladies Army. Why do we need to get there? Ladies Army brings together an assortment of players with unique and rich experiences from all walks of life. Our goal is to increase women’s participation in bike polo by interviewing women bike polo players to understand their perspectives and experiences and to find solutions. We'll create a free guidebook for clubs to better support and include women players.
Ladies Army 6 is a women's majority bike polo tournament that brings together women from around the world to compete, encourage, support, teach, and learn from each other. It is taking place in Toronto, Canada June 20th-23rd.
Here is the promotion video for Ladies Army 5, last year's tournament.
How are we going to accomplish our goal?
We've already started. Last April, we organized and hosted the first ever all women's bike polo tournament in California, the California Ladies Bike Polo Summit. We had women from around the world attend, with over 8 teams competing. The goal of the event was to help women players network, build skills, and for those going, get their teams ready for Ladies Army 6.
After the Summit, we wanted to do more. We wanted to represent the many different experiences of women in polo and this is where our idea for the guidebook came in.
In order to create a guidebook that bike polo clubs can reference, we have the following plans and timeline:
Interviews: network with and interview women polo players at Ladies Army about their experiences in bike polo and their perspective on increasing women's participation.
Analyze interviews: identify common themes women players experience when playing polo, identify any issues or problems they’ve had in bike polo, identify suggestions and solutions players have for increasing women’s participation.
Write final guidebook: create guidebook to building participation based on discussions with women polo players. Get feedback on guidebook from bike polo community, revise guidebook based on feedback.
Distribute guidebook: the finished guidebook will be made available for free download and marketed through popular bike polo blogs.
Where did our inspiration come from?
As the only three women between two city clubs, we wanted to find ways to get more women playing. We began hosting women-only polo events which dramatically increased women's attendance to pickup and co-ed practices! Our success made us curious to find other ways to increase women's participation.

What is bike polo?
Bicycle polo is an all-gender sport that infuses cycling and the basic principles of hardcourt hockey with teams of three attempting to score five points. Instead of hockey sticks, we have mallets that we use to maneuver and hit the ball to score. If you touch the ground with your foot, you must tap the wall at the center of the court with your mallet to re-enter the play. Bike polo is a fun and fast-paced game that requires agility, strength and endurance.
We have lots of ideas that we plan to roll out over the next year, stay tuned!
- Website and blog: create a website and blog written by women discussing bike polo in general and issues important to women in polo
California Women’s Bike Polo Academy: organize and host the first ever training camp for women players. The focus will be on drills and skill-building to increase women's competitive edge in bike polo
