61 donors have helped us kick-start Bread and Roses, a taboo-breaking, freethinking political-social TV magazine in Persian and English broadcast in Iran and the Middle East as well as globally via satellite and social media.
Whilst satellite dishes are illegal in Iran and often confiscated and destroyed by the Iranian regime, nearly 70% of Iranians have one. It's also an important way of gaining access to new information for people in other Middle Eastern and North African countries as well as by immigrants living in the West. Bread and Roses will be broadcast in Persian and English via New Channel TV and will eventually be available in other key languages.
The programme is hosted by Maryam Namazie, an award-winning secularist and atheist blogger and campaigner;Fariborz Pooya, founder of the Iranian Secular Society; Bahram Soroush, a civil rights activist and political commentator and Siavash Modaresi, editor of a cultural publication Pusheh.
It will discuss everything from Sharia law, child marriages, the right to atheism and apostasy, freedom of expression, sexuality, secularism and morality without religion from a Left and critical perspective.
What We Need & What You Get
An initial £4,000 raised in March 2014 bought us four HD digital cameras (CANON LEGRIA HF G25), SD cards and tripods. However, the programme needs some fundamental equipment in order to succeed. If you look at our first programme on Nude Protest, you can see that we have sound and lighting issues. Editing it also took forever because we didn't have a videomixer nor a decent computer!
We aim, therefore, to raise £15,000 for a Videomixer NewTek Tricaster 410 (£10,000), 4 Rode NTG-2 Condenser Microphones (£150 each totalling £600), 2 Rode WS6 Deluxe Microphone Windshield (£40 each totalling £80, Video Lighting Micansu Continuous lighting kit Daylight bulbs, cool lights (£370 each totalling £1,110, a MacPro Quad-Core and Dual GPU Computer (£3,000) and Cables and Miscellaneous items (£210).
We know it sounds like a lot of money but it will mean bringing years of free-thought, rationalism, atheism and secularism to Iran, the Middle East and North Africa and also Europe and the West.
Bread and Roses will be your programme as much as it will be ours. With your donations you will get a shout-out and thank you on our programme, will be able to decide issues for discussion, receive signed posters and T-shirts, get to attend an international conference on The Religious-Right, Secularism and Civil Rights in London in October 2014 and sit with a speaker of your choice at the banquet dinner. You can also receive immeasurable adoration and a lunch with us at an Iranian restaurant in London!
Most importantly you will get the satisfaction of knowing that you have helped encourage rationalism and free-thought in Iran, the Middle East and globally.
We have been active for several decades bringing a human and rights-centred approach to many different issues from child veiling to Sharia law. We have never shirked from addressing taboo or controversial issues and have consistently defended universal values, equality and civil rights despite the insistence on a racism of lower expectations and standards and a cultural relativism that demands that the "other" have less rights and freedoms depending on the "community" or society they belong to.
Things are changing, however, and we hope that Bread and Roses can help further articulate, strengthen and encourage universal values, free-thinking and secularism.
