The Brave Girls Alliance is a group of people who dedicate their lives to the empowerment and well being of girls. We are girls, businesses, experts, not-for-profit organizations, activists, parents and educators.
We have come together to ask media content creators, retailers, and every large corporation to make a commitment to support girls' empowerment.
We ask media creators to expand their vision of what it means to be a girl, and recognize our girls as whole, complex people and not as gender stereotypes. Stop profiting from selling girls short.
We believe girls deserve better, because we know the consequences to girls' well-being are serious.
We ask media creators to rethink products in development and ensure they teach girls to be strong, intelligent, and adventurous.
We ask media creators to rethink branding that pigeon-holes girls into the lowest common denominator (glitter, sexuality, hetero-normative femininity).
We ask media creators to elevate the elements that make the characters and narratives unique, instead of homogenizing the images and the merchandise.
- We ask media creators to practice corporate social responsibility now -- take the sexy out of childhood. Reducing female characters’ value to being about physical appearance and nothing more damages girls.
Our communities and all our allies have been using the hashtag #BraveGirlsWant to express their wishes and aspirations. We want to magnify their voices by showcasing them in digital billboards and special venues all over the world. We will will invade the most important locations in the world and we will start with Times Square.

Over the course of 7 days, curated tweets and messages from our communities will be displayed on a billboard on Times Square. We will take up 4 minutes per hour from 6 am to 2 am. This will enable us to display 40 messages/tweets per hour.
Just imagine... constructive, proactive and very inspiring messages being displayed in one of the centers of the world to millions and millions of people. Messages with suggestions for media and toys creators, retailers and big corporations.
We need your help to rent our first billboard in Times Square.
What We Need
We need to raise $25000:
- $20160 - to rent the billboard for 560 minutes over 7 days, 4 minutes every hour from 6 am to 2 am. That is 40 tweets/messages per hour.
- $2000 - to engage some of our girl activists and ask them to help run this campaign. They will coordinate efforts and even organize on-the-ground activities in Times Square including the distribution of pamphlets, flashmobs, etc. The money will help with any expenses and will serve as a token of appreciation and support for their future studies.
- $1090 - Any design assets and campaing material required for the campaign.
- $1750 - for Indiegogo and paypal charges.
Any additional funding will be used to run similar campaigns in the UK, Canada, and Australia.
We will have complete transparency in regard to the expenditure and the activities of this project. Reporting will be done on our website on a weekly basis.

We want to combine the power of new media (social media) with the power of old media: billboards, magazines, public spaces, TV... whatever we can access until we drive real change.
The combined expertise and track record of the members of the Brave Girls Alliance in regard to girl empowerment is unprecedented. We have written books, launched successful petitions, contributed to discussion and education on TV, newspaper and magazines, and built movements and value-driven businesses that are challenging the status quo. We have done it all and now we are combining our super powers with yours to reach the tipping point and drive significant change.

Engaging girls to run the campaign
This campaign will require great leadership and a lot of work and coordination that includes but is not limited to:
- Social Media monitoring, engagement and management.
- Tweets/Messages gathering and organisation of review process with the board.
- Event Management.
- Content creation.
- On the ground activities in Times Square such as panflet distribution and other awareness raising activities.
- Expenditure monitoring and reporting.
- Communication with vendors and designers.
This is a great project for our girl activists, young leaders that are keen to drive world change. Inês Almeida, one of the founders of the Alliance, will donate her time to coach, mentor this project team at no cost to the project. SparkSummit, a global girl-fueled activist movement and member of the Allliance and other girl movements from around the world will provide this project with the team of outstanding girls that will drive the revolution.
We want to reward the girl(s) by ensuring they will receive a small financial contribution to their future studies.
We will work hard to rent the ABC Disney Billboard on Times Square because it matches perfectly with the scope of our campaign. Although the spirit and scope of this campaign will be constructive and future-driven, Disney or ABC may decide to reject our request to rent this billboard or reject the content of our messages. We are hopeful that this will not be the case, but if this happens, we will rent a different billboard in Times Square.
Day Of The Girl
We will work hard to start our 7-day Times Square campaign on the 11th of October, 2013, the 2nd International Day Of The Girl. We cannot provide 100% assurance that it will go ahead on this date as we will only be able to schedule the rental of the billboard once this campaign is funded. But we will keep all our toes and fingers crossed :)
Rules for tweets/messages
- Tweet/Message is limited to 140 characters.
- Tweet/Message must contain the hashtag #BraveGirlsWant.
- Tweet/Message must contain your name or twitter name.
- Tweet/Message must allign with the mission, scope and values of The Brave Girls Alliance.
- Tweet/Message must not promote products or services.
- Tweet/Message must be constructive.
- Tweet/Message should not be used to criticize specific organisations or businesses, instead reframe it as suggestions for those businesses:
- NO -> #BraveGirlsWant @CompanyX to stop creating passive, brainless, beauty obsessed princesses
- YES -> #BraveGirlsWant @CompanyX to create a movie based on Malala’s story
- Tweet/Message should only contain language that is appropriate to be displayed in a family environment like Times Square.
We will not be able to refund you for rejected messages but will give you the opportunity to submit a new message.
The sponsors (see 5k Perk) will have no influence in regard to the content or curation of the tweets/messages. We assure the sponsors that all messages/tweets will focus on proactive and constructive feedback that is future- focused.
This is an opportunity for large media and toy companies, as well as retailers, to show they are interested in what this community has to say.
We are open to sponsorship discussions outside the scope of this crowdfunding campaign.
