Blurb for the Burbs:
The Empty Room Collective has been producing theatre in Toronto since 2010, we are excited to be back again this November with an original Canadian play by Michal Grzejszczak.
Boys From The Burbs is a comedic coming-of-age story that follows a group of friends growing up in the suburbs. We see their adolescent hopes and dreams awaken, as they begin to discover, and long for the world outside of their neighbourhood.
We are mounting a full production of BFTB in Toronto, opening on November 19th. With your help we will lift this bright and hopeful piece of theatre up from the page and onto the stage, giving it the production it deserves.
Theatre is hard. Putting on a play is a lot like back to school shopping for a 7th grader. First you have to clothe them, and we know how picky they can be (costumes: $600), then you have to buy them all their knapsacks and school supplies (props $400), send them off with lunch money (concessions: $250), and then when they get home you need somewhere to put them (rehearsal space: $1600), their own room with a desk lamp for homework (lighting: $700), and somewhere to practice their bassoon – or whatever – (sound: $400), and that's all assuming he or she actually behaves (insurance: $500). Oh yeah, then you've got to pay taxes to make sure there's a school to send them off to in the first place (venue rental: $3300).
Parents, we sympathize.
We're asking for $3000, about a third of our budgeted costs, and in return we have tons of perks to tempt you with, from tickets to the show and opening night party, to personalized videos of the producing team playing our your outrageous truth or dare challenges!
We know it's sometimes difficult to help out as much as you'd like, that's why we need people to help out by spreading the word too – the more shares we get on Facebook and Twitter, the better chance we have to meet our goals and water the seeds of a new generation of Canadian theatre!
