My name is Gail Wills, I live in the California area. I have worked in the school system for approximately 30 years as a sub, teacher's aide and after school day care provider. I worked at 4 different Elementary Schools including two middle schools. I have seen many children fall through the cracks and not succeed because of low self esteem.

So I felt the need to help in any way I could. Coming from a poor and humble beginning I knew how it felt to go to school with old or hand me down clothes, No backpack to carry my books. I understood how these children felt when the ones that come to school with new outfits and a brand new backpack every school year...that was not me...

I worked volunteering to build this self esteem that was lost. I was able to see for myself the smiles and excitement of young students walking down the halls of the first day of school. However, I also saw the lonely look of despair of those unfortunate students who's only means of carrying their books and supplies were their hands, like me. It finally dawned on me!! Those students that came to school fully prepared sporting a new backpack-were also sporting a level of confidence.

I began to wonder? What would be the one building block that could start all students off with that same level of confidence?

After pondering and with much concern and heartfelt emotions, I came up with this program of giving a new backpack with a new book inside to those students. What better way for a student to be able to walk in the classroom, on the first day of school, with brand new backpack. I felt this was the on thing that would get kids excited and keep them motivated to learn and grow.

BOOK IN A BACKPACK begins with a concept of - "ready and eager to learn" and ends with a concept of "positive reinforcement and success".

With your contribution  I will be able to first apply for my 501c3, purchase backpacks and books to send to schools all over the world..

I have response from President Obama expressing his gratitude to continue helping towards higher education. I have also written schools in my area with positive responses. I am also working with another foundation (Helping Hands Relief & Development) to take on own my project and send Book in a Backpack to Kenya and Pakistan.

All contributions will go towards the purchase of Backpacks, books and shipping cost.

This program will impact many children with hope, self esteem which would lead to success.

Many children have never had the opportunity to own their own backpack nor their own book. This would be mind changing for a lot of little ones.

If you cannot contribute at this time, please get the word out to those who can, or maybe you can purchase a backpack or a book. Maybe you work at a book store and would donate books...Or maybe you are a author of children's books and would donate your own book...How awesome would that be...
you can also follow me on Facebook  Book in a Backpack...let me know there how you can help, I know you want to, because I know it's the right thing to do...
