Where am I ? You crashed into a mysterious dark world. What can you do ? What will happen to you ? You decided to act... the adventure begins.

Blackvoxel is an role playing game based in a Sci-Fi abstract universe.

The game is built on the concept of massive voxel animation and interaction (you can see examples in the video).

The gameplay is based on industrialization, robotics and automation.

Blackvoxel development started in september 2010. The game is based on a fully specific game engine wich took a long time to write and optimize. It is specificaly designed to support the main new concept of the game : massive voxel animation and interaction.

Like atoms in the universe, some voxels can interract, move, or react with other voxels. This mean a lot of possible interactions: some physical, thermal and chemical reactions as well as automation.

The engine is writen in C++ using multithreading and specificaly optimized to cope with a lot of moving voxels.

We used a specific lighting model to get an abstract "computer style".

The engine allows an extended universe in the three dimensions including in the vertical direction.

The engine use pure voxel paradigm: In Blackvoxel, all is voxel and all is made with pure voxel interactions.

The game actualy runs on Windows XP, 7, 8 and Linux Ubuntu 12.04 and is in english language.

MacOs version may be planed if user loves it...

The story take place in the future. Tired of the civilisation, you decided to retire to a distant world. You bought a new discovered planet in your local planet selling agency.

The dealer made a good price on a paradisiac planet with beautiful landscape with islands, sandy beaches, palm forest and a beautiful blue sky. The catalog showed a friendly world populated of peacefull animals.

You have taken your new ship and started the long journey. During the trip, you dreamed of your new world. And finaly, after a year of boring travell you reached the orbit and started the landing procedure.

Infortunately, you hit an asteroid that was not on the map and your ship was heavily damaged. The ship wasn't controllable anymore and finally you crashed on your planet.

By chance, you still alive, but most of your equipment and materials was destroyed.

As soon as you looked around you, your realized that the planet wasn't what the dealer promised to you.

What a strange and desolated world with a black sky and strange luminous blocks !!!

All what you see is uncommon and you know nothing about it...

As you look on your personal digital assistant, you noticed you received an important email that arrived using powerfull long distance intergalactic emitters : the agency said that they may have made a mistake because someone confused planet data files. They said that in the eventuality you remain alive, the sales contract did not mention the details of the surface of the planet, and infortunately, they can't made any exchange and refund.

But before you can do something, you have no choice : you have no intergalactic ship to escape and no suitable communication equipment to query some help.

What you will do now is up to you...

You start the game with nothing in an empty place in this strange and hostile world.

Fortunately, you saved from the crash your Base Machine, an advanced 3D printer.

It will help you to build powerful machines, robots and conveying systems that are able to make everything you needs. You can build an airplane to move, do aerial tricks or go have fun in the canyons (see the video).

Below is an example from the game manual showing the manufacturing instructions for making an extraction robot.

In Blackvoxel Metallurgy you can melt materials into molten interactive blocs. Molten blocs interacts with others nearby molten blocs and their composition will blend. Dig a pit in the ground or build a large crucible to mix different molten metals. Use the right proportions to get all the high performance alloys needed for your manufacturings. Wait complete cooling or throw water on it for faster cooling. Go further and use automation to take a step towards industry.

Why not learning programming ?

Programming in Blackvoxel is an optional way and you can play without it.

We made programming available into Blackvoxel to give a good opportunity to learn programmation for those wanting to.

But remember that programming is in the real life of industry the only true way for very effective automation. So Blackvoxel may be used as a kind of learning tool. Programming is available in Blackvoxel by the way of a programmable robot you can drive using the Squirrel langage. We already made a lot of ready to use example programs in the manual to illustrate each function.

One of our futur goal might be to do some tutorials for learning base programming for beginners. Let us know what you think about that.

Squirrel is a good and modern programming langage. But one of the main reasons of the choice was it's use of a "near C style" syntax. Most of the main languages actualy used daily in the programming world are C syntax oriented (Ex : Javascript, C/C++, Java, PHP, Objective C, C#).

So, learning a language with this syntax style is a good starting point to begin with programming.

The Blackvoxel's world is big, even in the vertical direction. It is why we thought that there must be vehicles to get around. Currently, the aircraft is completed and fully usable. You can use it to cross the big mountains or for playing in the canyons. The piloting  was designed to give some fun and sensations as you can see at the end of the video. For the future, we plan to add more vehicles, like a car.

We are a small team of two programmers. Our profiles are very complementary. We are living in France, at Ville d'Avray in Paris region, near Versailles.

I am Laurent, a computer enthusiast since my young age. I was 12 years old when I started programming on an Atari 800XL, a 8 bit computer of the early 80'. I shared my first game creations with my friends that was computer enthusiasts like me. Since, I have programmed many softwares and i'm working as a programmer.

I am Olivia, an architect. I was initiated to programming over time. I bring my architectural creations on our shared vision in the ideas, structure, graphics and aesthetics.

Blackvoxel is the result of the combination of our common vision. This is a project on which we fully focus on in order to drive it in the best conditions.

There were several steps in the creation of the Blackvoxel video game project.

The first step was to create the Voxel Engine used in Blackvoxel. This first step was crucial because this is the care we have brought to this step that allow Blackvoxel to have its own characteristics such as Massive Voxel Animation and Interaction or the extended universe in the three dimensions. A lot of technical researches were required to complete this step that was long and difficult.

The second step was to develop the idea of our game based on our Voxel Engine. We had ideas and a strong vision of what we wanted to do, but it took much effort to carry them out effectively in our game. We completed this stage and now we can say the game actually exists.

Now we are coming to the third step. This is where you come in and where we need your help !

We need a few more months of development to finish the game the way we want. What we are planning to do :

> Add new sounds
> Add new areas to explore with their own geography
> Add new vegetation
> Add a vertical lift or a vertical vehicle
> Add new enemies and traps
> Add new vehicles

To do this we need your financial contributions to enable us to achieve this final step.

If we receive contributions beyond the goal, it will be used to add content in Blackvoxel.
