Jenny's Birthday Wish
I am commited to researching ways that we can provide all people with better care regardless of their background, all while letting members of their commnity lead the way in education and outreach. For the past few years, I have been working in everything from small villages to underserved neighborhoods of Boston to help bring families better healthcare in their communities. In the past my work has helped to improve outreach and treatment in a rural Peruvian mental health clinic and helped fight malnutrition and obesity in children throughout the Boston area.
The Community Empowerment Lab, featured in the TED talk video above, has invited me to work alongside them on several neonatal health studies to save babies and new mothers. Although many of us can easily go to a hospital, many of these mothers give birth without any medical professionals accompanying them, and often lose babies or suffer greatly due to a lack of knowledge and care. Our research, which has been funded by the World Health Organization as well as the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, will help provide treatment and identify sustainable ways to protect babies and mothers in India. Our studies affect over 100,000 people and the findings are applied to form programs which reach many millions more.
For my birthday, help me give young families the care they need.
Some of the projects I will be working on include:
-Creating and teaching a newborn care checklist for rural settings
- Programs to promote use of skin-to-skin care, early breastfeeding, birth preparation, and thermoregulation
-Improving infection control in primary health centers (particularly in labor and delivery) in rural India through education and behavior change with frontline health care workers
- Design of a community-based iron-supplementation program to reduce iron-deficiency anemia in children aged 6-11.
How You Can Help
As you can imagine, this sort of travel can be costly. I am looking for funding to provide for a flight and a small room while I work in India for the next few months. Your support will help me arrive and live in India while I work 40 hours a week on research and program implementation in villages which need it most.
Any little bit you can donate would help me bringcare to these in need, and would also make my birthday wish come true! Of course, you are all invited to celebrate my birthday with me as a thank you in addition to all of the above. Additionally, please repost this link to spread it to others and help find people who will support my work. Thank you for all of your help and support!
