UPDATE! September 11th!
So we seem to be off to a pretty slow start. So how about we make things more interesting. Starting September 11th, we will be having a push day each week for the rest of the campaign. Perks will be juggles a bit to make different donation points slightly more enticing, starting with Donate-What-You-Can Wednesday.

Better Half has been called the movie that's missing from the landscape of Gay Cinema and we proudly acknowledge that distinction. BETTER HALF tells a modern day story about the pitfalls and obstacles a stable relationship endures when going through the paining pains of becoming a family, through the eyes of a gay couple. BETTER HALF is a story with universal themes of family and love and obligation that transcends race, gender or sexual orientation.
For the better part of the year, we have been working on filming Better Half, the story of Tony & Leo and their rocky road from partners to becoming parents. This very indie film was been financed thusfar thru the Bank of Michelle (myself) and through the generous contribution made through crowdfunding. Our campaigns have been very modest, only trying to raise enough money to keep going. We are now at the point where finishing is in striking distance, and we are calling upon the faithful supports of Gay cinema and Indie filmmaking to get us cross the finish line. Whatsmore, we need you to get us over the goal line in time to submit to the TRIBECA FILM FESTIVAL.
What We Need
Our Goal is to finish principle photography by the end of October 2013 in order to make the regular submission deadline for the Tribeca FIlm Festival. That leaves no more time to fundraise, so we are asking for enough money to get us through the last 9 days of filming. How we will spend the money when we reach our goal:
- LOCATIONS. We have five (5) specialty locations that we can't fake, can't get free and will require permits. These same locations will also requires LOTS of EXTRAS. Each of these days will easily cost $2000+ a day.
- EQUIPMENT RENTAL. Because this production does not own any equipment, rentals are needed every time we shoot. And all rentals must be insured.
Any funds where we fall short, I will have to find a way to make up the difference somehow. But the part that sucks is that we will definitely miss the TRIBECA deadline. Any Funds we raise over the amount will go to post-production. There is compositing that needs to happen and we will need money to hire a composer. We need money to buy the rights to songs sung in the movie - that's gonna cost a pretty penny! But rest assured, every penny we raise is going into this film.
What You Get
I think we have some pretty cool perks. You can buy a T-shirt with Tony or Leo or both guys on it. I think the coolest perk might be the SKYPE chats. See what the actors are like in real life, and by the way, they are all great guys & gals. The most popular perk if os course the copy of the movie with you can pre-order as a hard copy DVD or a digital download. And the Limited Edition Collectors Character Cards will only be printed once so quantities will be extremely limited. I would highly recommend that perk, 'cause these kids are likely to blow-up once this film drops. (I'm just sayin'..) ALSO, all pre-ordered DVDs and Digital Downloads will be of the DIRECTOR'S CUT, containing deleted scenes that do not appear in the final film.
Over and over again, I hear from people in the community say this is a story they have never seen before. And that was exactly my intension. There are so many stories out there, so many communities and groups that are simply invisible to the commerce-driven studio system. I want to see the world in which I live on screen. I want to see the people I know and the issues of the day explored more broadly. Stories have the power to reach people, to change minds, to start the conversation.
This film is an attempt to illuminate the fact that we, as common members of the human race, have a human experience that is more alike than we are demographically difference.
