Who We Are:
At Violette Bakers we use natural, organic, locally-sourced ingredients and HAND-MAKE everything from scratch. (Credo #1 and #2 of our food revolution.) Did you know that even some "artisan food producers" and bakeries use a co-packer (a food factory that makes foods for lots of brands)? At Violette Bakers we use fresh fruits, edible flowers and seasonal vegetables (too delicate for machines). We hand-mill much of our own flour so that our baked goods not only taste better, they are better for you. We aim for a product that’s not just “good for gluten free,” but also that’s just plain good. In January 2014, we were included in Best of the New for bakeries in the Boston Globe Magazine.
Why We Need YOU!
Our landlord raised our rent 200% and to an unsustainable level! They gave us our initial notice to move, meaning we have to be in a new location by Fall. Which means we have to find a new location immediately. We are seeking funds to help us move and retrofit a new kitchen/bakery. It will likely cost us between $50,000-75,000 to build a new kitchen and store front. So many have thanked us for existing, have cried on the spot after tasting our food, and we hope our customers, supporters and anyone who WANTS REAL FOOD (isn't that everyone?) will help us get into a new bakery space so we can continue to provide exceptional gluten free food, from a dedicated gluten free bakery and using organic, local and humane ingredients as much as we can.
Unfortunately for some of you, despite numerous requests, we don't ship. Credo #3 is value added food should stay local. Its better that way for the environment and the local economy. So while we'd love you to partake in our food--making you hunger for more revolution, alas, you must come to the Boston area to do so.
In 2012, Leesteffy began selling at local
farmer’s markets under the name of Violette Bakers. Violette Bakers was an
instant success with customers—gluten free and gluten-full alike—everyone loved
the freshness and unique European style of the baked goods. Knowing that gluten free
food had become synonymous with bad tasting food, Violette Baker’s motto was Gluten Free for Everyone. Or, If it tastes gluten free we won’t sell
it! (Credo #4)
In June 2013, Violette Bakers moved into a bakery space at 1001 Mass Ave on a temporary basis. We intended the space to be temporary because it was in the basement and was in horrible shape, but instead of being able to simply clean and plug in our equipment, the project became a money pit.The wiring, plumbing and general systems were so outdated, we had to spend significant sums just to use the kitchen. As a gluten free bakery we can’t use a co-shared kitchen because of cross-contamination issues so we were stuck. And, this left us with little resources to move to a new location.
We tried to make lemonade out of our lemons and decided to open retail at this location. But last week, Dunkin Donuts opened upstairs and now the landlord wants box store rates from his tenants. He's given us notice to move if we don't pay 200% more--with more raises to come!
Even if you can't contribute, please share our campaign with everyone you know. We'd love to continue providing you, our public, with organic, local, humane gluten free food that everyone can enjoy.
