We have started Weladna two years ago with the passion to create a channel of communication with the new generation through highly creative products. Baladna has been our dream. A game about culture, about people and the potential they hold. A game that introduces concepts as renewable energy, sustainable architecture, religious diversity and much more in the most subtle and playful manner. A game filled with so many mind stimulating concepts yet is so easy to digest that it leaves a mark in the kids minds. A game that opens the door to a new way of education. A game that aims to change the game of the future.
We aim to collect $15,000 to do the full launch of the game. The money collected beyond the 8,000 $ will be spent on creating, designing and printing other educational products using the content that was generated in the process of making Baladna but was not used in addition to printing 200 free copies and facilitating 30 sessions.
The more support we receive the more powerful our impact. The more supporters we have the bigger and stronger the network of individuals eager to collectively create alternative ways of education.
We will launch Baladna by organizing a gathering for all the supporters of the campaign alongside 15 educational organizations for us all to meet and explore future projects and possible ways in collaboratively creating engaging learning opportunities for more children. So if you supported us and we reached $15,000 get ready to party with more likeminded people.
We started working on creating the second version in September 2013. Throughout the last 9 months over 1000 hours were invested in aggregating and validating content as well as game dynamic design and illustration followed by rounds of testing and feedback. At this exact point we are putting the final touches to the game according to the feedback received as well finalising design and of course crowd-funding to finance part of the production of the game as well as sponsor over 100 free copies that will be distributed to community centres across Egypt.
We chose to crowd-fund because we simply believe in the collective power of the crowd, in giving life to the products we need to see in the hand of our kids. Together we need to seed a new method of education for our future selves.
The goal of Baladna is for the players to explore the idea of culture through travelling around Egypt on the board. In each area players are introduced to various concepts that hold developmental potential and are asked different questions about geography, language, people, food, animals, environment, music, traditions, crafts, monuments, resources as well as challenges of the area.Questions are asked in an indirect form hence not assuming any previous knowledge but rather using different techniques activating critical thinking, opinion forming or artistic skills such as drawing or acting. It's a journey of discovering new information, reflecting upon it and using it in a new context.
The game shifts the mindsets of children and exposes them to new beneficial concepts; it changes thinking patterns which is a much needed change for the future.
An important aspect of creating the game is to prove that it's possible! It is possible to design and manufacture a high quality, valuable content local game. It is possible that the next time you walk into a toy store you find an alternative to games that encourage violence or consumerism. It is possible to see characters that you would relate to, products that value plurality and diversity, that value sincerity and being comfortable with who we are.
With each Baladna sold, a percentage of the price will go to providing the game and the experience to children who can't afford it, for the knowledge to spread, and also for us to collect knowledge from children who would shape the evolution of Baladna, the game and the country.
So why do we need your support when we already have a game in the market? Simply because we didn't stop by launching the first version but rather used it as a tool to test the market and collect more insights from children who played it to further develop it into a one of a kind game. A highly qualified team of educators and designers was formed for Baladna 2.0 to make sure that the game covers all important cultural and sustainability concepts, activates different senses of children, meets the highest pedagogical standards for learning and above all is extremely fun and dynamic to play. A highly challenging process that consumed over 1,000 hours of our time yet is worth every minute as it sets a new model in educational games in Egypt.
