Baking Ninjas - Making the World a Sweet Place to Live
Too many people are scared of baking. Unlike cooking, which can be easily eyeballed, baking feels more like chemistry; it's easy to picture mad scientists getting the formula wrong and ending up with smoke and fires running rampant through their kitchens.
We, at Baking Ninjas, come from the world of baking. The original founder, Lya Laberge, grew up within bakeries. Her mother, and grandmother before her, run bakeries in Miami and El Salvador. Her grandmother has won awards for entrepreneurship in a mostly male-dominated country. Her mother has made wedding cakes for some very well-known celebrities.
Lya did not follow in the tradition, instead going on to create educational materials for techies in both commercial and government sectors. Her work has been presented to hundreds of learners all over the world to much positive acclaim. She, however, never lost her love of baking.
Baking Ninjas represents a melding of her family history with her knowledge of instructional design. Learners will be eased into the baking paradigm through videos featuring all sorts of people in real, lived-in kitchens. Learners can take these videos and in turn practice their art in their own homes (or dojos). These learning videos will be funny, light, and gender-neutral; we know men love to bake as much as women and believe that the childhood embarrassment of craving pink play ovens can be overcome. Through a progression of structured online content, easy to follow videos, and a supportive social community where both the successes and errors of baking are celebrated, all students will grow in their level of comfort.
What We Need & What You Get
We are asking for $50,000 in funding. This funding helps us to pay for:
- Contract costs for design & development of the web site.
- Video and lighting equipment for at least three kitchen recording sites. We want consistent videos with the same quality, no matter where we shoot them.
- Mixers, bowls, measuring cups and spoons, and other kitchen equipment to make sure all the sites are consistent.
- This is a learning endeavor, visual cues like colors of the bowls or cups help students to recognize measurements. We'd like to have the same sets in all locations to keep consistency in the learning experience.
- Server upkeep costs.
- We've seen many enterprises fail because they didn't take into account several factors, like sufficient bandwidth, sufficient server resources, and length of time before all of this pays for itself.
We’ll break up the needs into smaller pieces. Right now we have $506 in our crowdfunding. Lets aim for three of these:http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,590518,00.asp
So, if we get enough money for three of these cameras, we have enough to have our three locations film. We’ll make that the first goal.
Your contribution will help bring baking to a young audience of beginning bakers. We will open the kitchen up to a new way of playful learning that even more experienced bakers can enjoy. We have a great team of technical and educational leaders already in the process of designing the user experience and preliminary educational courses.
Instead of searching for baking videos randomly on popular video sites to learn concepts like breaking eggs or weighing flour, a feat that might take twenty minutes, Baking Ninjas will provide a complete curriculum with videos tailored for the process of actually performing your tasks in the kitchen. Your contribution will help fund the making of videos, the software to cut the video up into our special, easy to watch format, and the development of a fun reward-based website where users can track and share their progress.
Baking at home brings many benefits, including creating preservative-free desserts. Food you make at home, sweet or savoury, contains much less in the way of preservatives and artificial additives than what you buy at the store. We hope that by teaching more people how easy baking is, we'll encourage a better, richer life that still includes sweets.
Other Ways You Can Help
This site will be no small task, and to really make it great, we need your support. Support includes everything from your donation to help spreading the word that Ninjas can bake and anyone can join the path to baking greatness!
