I've lived through professional football and baseball tryouts not to mention a very public marriage to Canadian rock icon, Bif Naked. Covered the Olympics, Stanley Cup, Memorial Cup and Grey Cup finals.
And let's not forget the Canadian Cannonball Championships -- where I finished third, mind you.
Still, none of these challenges compare to the one on which I am now embarking. Yes, after a successful 13-year career with writing sports for the Vancouver Sun, it's time for an even greater challenge: To go back to school.
Film school, that is.
That's right, I just got the last spot in Vancouver Film School's Writing for TV & Film program. It's an intensive one-year program that starts Aug. 26.
And oh yeah, it's not cheap..
Like $20K. Now, that does include everything. Books. Supplies. Production costs. The cool chair with 'Walker' stiched into the back in gold lettering...
Seriously though, the other $13,000 will be used for living expenses. And the remaining $300? Well, my favourite number is 3, so three, threes in a row just seemed like a good omen. *please prove me right*
Now, I'm not going to try and guilt you in contributing to my life's purpose. But what I will say, is that I have a gift. And that gift is telling stories. Stories that make you cry. Stories that make you laugh. Stories that trick your wife or girlfriend into wanting to sit down and watch sports with you.
I'm also the champion of the underdog and take great pride in my ability to inspire others through my words. If you want to know a secret, it's because I see a lot of myself in those who have to work extra hard to accomplish their goals. You see, for a long time it was me who was always being told I was too little, too slow, too dumb, too rebellious to make anything of myself.
I promise you, nothing is going to change in these regards. Basically, all I'm doing is switching mediums.
Okay, enough with the sell-job, already. Just know, I've never been more determined to make this happen. With or without your help, I'm going back to school.
Speaking of which, even if you can't contribute financially, I'd still be happy to have you as a member of Team Walker. You can make a huge impact just by getting the word out to friends, family and any rich people you know. The Indiegogo share tools make it super easy to do.
Good Karma to you all.
