What is Awesöme Orchestra?
Founded last spring by conductor, David Moschler, our mission is to seek out bold new musical adventures and innovative ways to make orchestras more accessible to our community.
We believe in the power of the orchestra, and think that this great and inspiring art form should be as accessible as possible to everyone in our community. We want to bring everyone along for the adventure.
We do this by holding regular, open orchestra rehearsals every month (which we call "sessions") at various non-traditional rehearsal spaces throughout the Bay Area. In the last year we've held over twenty-five free, open sessions and played over sixty large-scale orchestral works of all kinds – film music, Sly and the Family Stone, video game music, exciting Bay Area artists such as UnderCover Presents, Beats Antique, Ensemble Mik Nawooj, Matt Montgomery, Van Dyke Parks, and of course lots of great traditional orchestral music. Over half of the pieces we've played are by living composers and a quarter of them are premiere readings of new works and arrangements, most of which are by local Bay Area composers!
What We Need & What You Get
It takes a lot of resources to run an orchestra and keep our sessions free and open to anyone: renting and maintaining a music library of exciting music, renting accessible venues that can house a full orchestra, general liability insurance, providing free beer for our musicians (and keeping it cold!), renting and storing equipment and instruments and vans to move them, writing and researching grants, and of course getting the word out. Up until now, we've been paying most of our expenses out-of-pocket. We now have a small but resourceful part-time staff working hard every day to organize and plan these free sessions and make it easy to participate and enjoy.
Please donate to our campaign – any amount goes a long way to directly helping keep our sessions free, open to everyone, and awesöme.All-in-all, we need your help to raise $10,000 for our budget this year (after fees are deducted from our $12,500 goal by Indiegogo and Intersection for the Arts, our non-profit fiscal sponsor). Here's what we get:
We've got some Awesöme perks for folks who donate, including:
- AÖC T-shirts, CDs, frisbees, and drink koozies!
- Private music lessons on ANY traditional instrument from one of the many awesome professional instructors that play with us, either in person or via Skype!
- Request specific pieces from our repertoire for or even guest conduct one of them at an upcoming session!
- A surprise, pop-up orchestra for you to create your own musical adventure!
- . . . And much more!
Awesöme Orchestra Collective is a member of the Intersection Incubator, a program of Intersection for the Arts, one of San Francisco's oldest leading non-profit organizations. They provide fiscal sponsorship for us, so any amount you donate to our campaign is fully tax deductible.
Why Awesöme Orchestra?
We think that an orchestra should not only serve but represent our community. The more accessible, the more adventurous! Whether it's where we play, whose music we play, with whom we play, and how we play it.
In the last year alone we have had over 500 musicians play with us, and have played for over 2500 people at our sessions and special events. We are excited by what we have accomplished in the last year, and we have so many exciting adventures planned for 2014 and beyond and need your help to reach everyone that wants to play with us. There's so many awesome people out there and so much great music that needs to be played and we want to find them!
We love the Bay Area and want keep it awesome by providing a fun, free, and relaxing atmosphere for people to create and enjoy orchestral music of all kinds.
