Awesome Books is an artist-run independent bookstore, selling new and used books, that opened in February 2010 in the Garfield neighborhood of Pittsburgh, PA. Filling a void caused by the closure of Border’s and Barnes and Noble stores in the area, Awesome Books opened their second store in Downtown Pittsburgh in Jan. 2012, as part of a Pop Up program initiated by Mayor Ravenstahl’s office. After a year downtown, Awesome Books has decided to stay, although the space we are renting has no HVAC system. We are using this Indiegogo campaign to get a few bigger space heaters for this winter. We are also raising money to continue publishing poetry and art books – you can check out our publications at www.LascauxEditions.com. Our latest book, Jimmy Cvetic’s Dog Unleashed, was released at the Warhol Museum, as part of a fundraiser for Jimmy’s boxing gyms. Cvetic, a former police officer, was recently interviewed by NPR, and has read his poetry on the radio in New York, Los Angeles, and Pittsburgh. His latest work was featured in several Best of Small Press 2012 listings. Funding will also be used for acquiring more books for the store from a wider base of publishers - we are constantly expanding our inventory to include more and more new books. Being able to increase our stock will provide a more solid foundation for our future. We would also like to acquire software to keep track of our stock, and to get a scanner. If Santa is really good this year, we would also like to get a security system of some kind, because, believe it or not, people downtown like to shoplift, even at an independent bookstore! Your “contribution” will be matched with a gift certificate – we aren’t looking for charity, we are just inviting you to be an Awesome Books customer. You can also choose from a variety of perks, such as hand-printed bookmarks, limited edition prints, original portraits or ceramics by Laura Jean McLaughlin and Bob Ziller. (You can check out our artwork at www.LauraJeanMcLaughlin.com and www.BobZiller.com ).
We sincerely appreciate your support for independent bookstores!
