A 20 year old MakeSense gangster from Hong Kong travelling around Asia in the quest of community-led social innovation.

Sense Tour?

A 20 year old MakeSense gangster from Hong Kong travelling around Asia in the quest of community-led social innovation.

FAQ#92 What if you crowd-fund more than €800?

Before I answer this question, you have to be aware of something in my trip known as “Survival Fund” or “At-Least-I-Won’t-Starve-to-Death Fund”. Of course, and a little information about Crowd-funding.

Crowd-funding is a public fund-raising way which makes use of the financial support from individuals to actualize a plan. It is presumed that even if we are a cent short, the trip cannot go on as planned, and the money crowd-funded will be returned to the donors. In other words, the Crowd-funding project fails if the target is not met.

Crowd-funding is very popular and common in the Western countries, but it’s still a fresh idea to the Hong Kongers. That is why I have set a low target to launch this project, and so I call the fund “At-Least-I-Won’t-Starve-to-Death Fund”.

What makes up the “At-Least-I-Won’t-Starve-to-Death Fund”?
Apart from the round-trip air ticket which costs me €130 and the visa which costs €100, the other parts of the fund is made up of the following, with a few presumptions:
It is presumed that
1) friends and working partners would offer me a place to stay, hopefully, so I won’t have to spend a dollar on accommodation;
2) my average expense on food would be €2 daily;
3) I take the land route whenever I have to travel (except for traveling to Sri Lanka, which is an island country), so the expense would be around €200

According to my past experience, €2500 would be a reasonable amount of money for my trip. You can imagine how difficult it is for me when all the money I have with me is called “At-Least-I-Won’t-Starve-to-Death Fund”.

Therefore, any money I am getting extra from the Crowd-funding project will proceed to another fund, namely the “Touch-Wood Fund”. In that way, making use of “Touch-Wood Fund”, my journey is more likely to be able to continue even if the above presumptions cannot be met.

For your information, expenses spent for personal entertainment like sightseeing at tourist spots or souvenir purchasing would definitely be excluded from the Crowd-fund, i.e. my “At-Least-I-Won’t-Starve-to-Death Fund”.

Of course, even if I only have €800 with me without the “Touch-Wood Fund”, the plane is still going to take off as planned.

THE TOUR AND I

It started with a dream of using business concepts to create social impact. Stephanie is going to take a gap year in 2013/14 to travel in Asia (Malaysia, Vietnam, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Singapore). With the partnership with local social enterprises, she will engage local community through participatory design to make a difference WITH the community.

What is a Sense Tour?

MakeSense is an open project that connects social entrepreneurs with supercool individuals ready to solve their challenges. We make this happen in the offline mode through our events such as SenseCamps that bring together social entrepreneurs, social business enthusiasts and others for a full day of talks, workshops and networking.  In the SenseCamp in Wiesbaden, Germany, I started my journey with MakeSense as a “MakeSense gangster“.

Sense Tour is currently happening in different parts of the world – “Europe Sense Tour” and “Meditterean Sense Tour”, and “Asia Sense Tour” is coming up. We are of different personal quest, different format and different outcome – with the same vision – catalyzing collective social innovation.

My Story

I am from the prosperous Hong Kong. I got into the “elite programme” in the Asia rank 1 university. There seemed to have nothing wrong in my life and my family were anticipating my path like any other ones in the aspiration bubble of “getting HK$1,000K per year in an investment bank”. This is how we define “success” and “excellence”.

I know what I am supposed to do to live up to others expectation but I wonder what I want to do to live my life to the fullness.

Living in one of the most polarized society in the world, I see poverty here, deprivation there and desperation is just round the corner. I wonder shall I make the world a little bit more beautiful?

Thanks to the inspiration that led me to the concept of “social entrepreneurship“. To put it in short – its a business that is born for creating social impact. It differs from non-profit organization with its bottom line of financial sustainability. (For deeper discussion on definition, look at Social Entrepreneurship: A Case of Definition from Stanford Social Innovation Review) Since then, my path is no longer obvious and secured, yet very surprising and exciting.

Last year in my first solo trip to Southeast Asia, I met 2 social enterprises – one proved how business improved lives from the livelihood to the soul, while another brought me to evaluate the business model and allowed me to see the difference before I left. By a coincidence, I was invited to give a lecture to a group of Singaporean social entrepreneurship students. From this trip, I was more certain that I had a real passion in social entrepreneurship and applying my knowledge in where impact happens was my thrilling moment. What if I bring these into my interest – backpack travelling?

Since I had the  idea of a tour with social impact, I have had a very clear goal to equip myself with experience and knowledge.

The half year exchange in Europe brought me to another stage of my dream. It was fair to say – opportunities were simply everywhere. I joint participatory design trainings, design jams and a lot of social innovation events.I was invited to share my learning at the Cyprus Social Entrepreneurship Conference with the social entrepreneurs, scholars and government ministers.  The learning curve has never been so steep.

The time in Europe taught me one thing - everyone can be anyone. “Forget about what you are supposed to be. Live as anyone that you want to become.” Standing on the dilemma of mainstream vs dream, an inspiring Swedish friend reminded me one thing – “If you have no passion in banking, you can only be mediocre. Why not work so hard and be excellent in the field that you are passionate in?”

When I was travelling in London, it happened that my host lived next to Jamie Oliver’s Fifteen restaurant – the first social enterprise that inspired me the concept. When I held the menu of Fifteen, I guess the waitress could read my amazement – “Take it if you like.” At Fifteen, I went back to the start. Yes, I am now right at the starting line.

Why Support?

Indeed, why a stranger donate money to another stranger to accomplish a social innovation dream?

In my exchange in Europe, I came across a participatory design training in Sweden. I was shocked when I saw the fee and I knew I couldn’t join it. It turned out that the most shocking part was a young Swede who I have just met twice said “we can sponsor you”. “The Art of Hosting” was one of the most eye-opening training I have ever been. Still, it was confusing to me why people could be so selfless to a stranger.
“How could you trust me that I am serious?”
“It is not hard to know. I am also a person with passion but when I talked to you, I could see that you passion is huge.

When I asked how I could give back…
“No. Just work hard on your passion and remember to share through your blog.”

This “just work hard on what your passion” motivated me to reach out to even more opportunities in Europe to equip myself. My itinerary was a route to meaningful events. It could be tiring but there wasn’t a reason to give up when I remember a new friend selflessly contributing to my dream.

If you ask, in what way I could give back to your support, I would say today I have nothing but a promise – “work hard on my passion”. I hope one day you will be glad that you have made this nearly zero return investment, simply in hope of making a dream come true.

#SHARING THE JOURNEY

Sharing my journey is helpful! This helps me crowd-source more funding and spread my beliefs.

# CROWD-FUNDING

The cause to crowdfund : Traveling Asia in the gap year to foster community-led social innovation through participatory design.

From my solo traveling experience in Southeast Asia and Europe…
[Accommodation] Southeast Asia guesthouses cost around 5€ per night. Yet, I am more interested in Couchsurfing which can bring me closer to the local.
[Food] I am trying to eat less, but still…
[Transportation] I prefer going by land route. 24 hours from Kunming to Laos and 3 days from Tibet to Guangzhou were  some of the most memorable experiences. (and CHEAPER!)

I am going to crowdfund 800€ - for survival purpose in the coming year

Dream is a theme of the Asia Sense Tour. Everyone who is involved with this project must be doing something that they are passionate at the same time. The “perks” to the supporter are created by my fellows who are working hard for their dream.

If you would like to donate but do not need the “perks”, please choose " Contribute Now" to fund your preferred amount.

[ THANK YOU Postcard ] – 5€

I will send a postcard with the photos I take to share my stories.
Would you like to experience my experience through my lens?

[ +Mind Card ] – 15€

When Tiffany Lee did a one-month busking in Europe as a “unicorn”, people asked “do you shit rainbow?”

Well, yes, at least her brain is full of rainbows. A year ago, she told me that she would like to design cards to spread her positive beliefs. Do you know why turtle is a friend of a turtle? Tiffany will let you know.

[W.H.Y. Totebag] – 30€

Wong Hin Yan is a passionate artist trying to “Draw beyond the Sketchbook”. She started a risky small business – to design totebags and sell them at a buyer-determined price. Her belief is “if you haven’t had the ability to achieve a huge dream, start with the small ones.”
Totebag

She designed “I’ll do what it takes until I touch the sky” for the Asia Sense Tour supporters, in the hope of “bringing your dreams into your everyday life”.

[ Sharing Cafe ] – 50 €

After the tour, I will share my experience as a talk at your suggested occasion.
{HONG KONG only}

[ Your Portrait ] – 100€

Rebecca Tso ignored the deep-rooted myth in Hong Kong – “artists will end up beggars” and went to the University of Arts London to go for her dream. Supporters can send her a photo and she will draw a portrait for them.

This my favorite painting of Rebecca and this is also her first  painting sold in London.

[ Participatory Design / Design Thinking workshop ] – 150€

After the tour, I will provide a workshop to allow the supporters to experience “Participatory Design”/ “Design Thinking” which are the approaches to engage with local community during the Asia Sense Tour. It is suitable for schools, corporates and non-profits training. It will be tailor-made for particular purpose.
