Hello everyone!

Who am I? My name is Courtney Smith and I'm a 22 year old from good ol' Philadelphia. I work in the Pennsylvania SPCA's shelter hospital where we care for victims of cruelty and neglect and maintain the health of animals waiting for their new homes.

What am I planning to accomplish with Anthropawlogy?
Shelters and rescues are evolving quickly and I want to document these changes and successful practices. With my findings I plan to:

  • Create an online database/forum that can be used as a communication tool between animal shelters and rescues. This will alleviate reoccuring problems in some shelters where others have overcome the same obstacle. This database can also be used to find sanctuary for some more urgent and specific cases.
  • Work tirelessly with dedicated volunteers and staff members to slowly test out and apply new programs/protocols/procedures to the PSPCA. These practices will be drawn from the analysis of successful systems throughout the country.
  • Make donation care packages for each shelter/rescue from items that I will be gathering from several drop-off boxes throughout Philly (see below for list of drop-off sites).

Wait, so what exactly am I going to be looking into?

  • Animal enrichment
  • Animal housing
  • Intake protocols
  • Feral cat//TNR programs
  • Funding//donations
  • Volunteer programs
  • Advertising//public relations//sponsorship
  • Adoptions//events
  • Public spay and neuter programs
  • Interaction with other shelters//rescues
  • Public veterinary clinics
  • Low cost vaccine clinics
  • Foster programs//hospice care
  • Humane law enforcement
  • Caring for exotics
  • Euthanasia - behavioral//medical
  • Size//location//hours
  • Medical facilities//protocols
  • Average animal length of stay

Please feel free to contact me with any suggestions!

Why do I care about the current state of our shelters? Every animal that I have ever known has treated me with kindness. They understand every language, know the value of family, can have loads of fun, and are smarter than some of our closest friends and family (and cuter). With that being said, why wouldn't I want to spend my time making the shelter community more unified and efficient for their benefit?

Where do I want to go? As far in each direction and to as many places as time and money will allow! Current stops include facilities as far northwest as Washington, scattered throughout the pacific coast, zig-zagged across the south, and along the east coast up to New England.

When am I leaving and how long will I be gone? September 1st - October 1st (2013)

Where is your money going and who are you helping?
This trip is for every animal that has ever been in a shelter, been at risk of ending up in a shelter, or those that are still waiting for their new families.

Monetary donations will be put toward the only major expense for the actual traveling portion - fuel. Gas is undeniably expensive. For the entire trip, the cost for gasoline alone is $2000-$2500 (calculated with average car gas mileage and under the assumption that everything runs smoothly).

**With any additional funds (over $2000), I will purchase essential wish list items for the PSPCA, ACCT Philly, and other local shetlers.

You're short on money? No worries!
Go to your local shelter or rescue and ask them how you can help! There are always odd jobs and serious projects that could use your time and effort!

You're short on money AND time? I know the feeling! There are still options!

PHL - On August 6th, I will be setting up donation drop boxes at the following local businesses (with more to come):
Little Baby's Ice Cream
Cedar Park Embassy // 4903 Catharine Street, Philadelphia, PA 19143
World Headquarters // 2311 Frankford Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19125
Blackbird Pizzeria
507 S. 6th St., Philadelphia, PA 19147

ELSEWHERE - Drop off items that you think your local shelters could use! Check their websites for a wish list or a list of suggested donations.

Here are some common helpful donations:

  • Linens - towels, blankets, sheets, pillowcases, clothing, pillows, etc.
  • Food items - canned/dry animal food, treats, peanut butter
  • Toys - stuffed toys (without beads/beans), rope toys, chew toys, Kongs, squeeky toys, or get creative and make some toys!

Some unconventional suggestions:

  • Office supplies - pens, pencils, scrap paper, markers, tape, scissors, rulers, etc.
  • Storage containers of all sizes and types
  • Medical equipment - bandage scissors, medical tape, hemostats, some medications, etc.

Over the next few days I will be organizing my itinerary and posting details - the website, dates, locations, fundraising/donation updates, etc.

So what now? Tell your friends! Donate! Volunteer! Take your own trip! Adopt!

Thank you in advance for your contribution! We only have one week to do this in order for me to have the funds in time to hit the road!
