My name is Anand Balroop and I’m an Indian Classical Singer and Composer. I was born and raised in Montreal Canada where I currently reside as well. I am looking to release two traditional albums. I've been learning music since I was 8 years old. I first started my training learning tabla and dholak from two very prominent musicians from the West Indies. From the age of 10 to current day, I have been accompanying and performing with many artists from India, Pakistan, Trinidad and Guyana. At age 13, I started learning Indian classical singing. I'm fluent in English, Hindi and Bhojpuri but sing in various other languages as well. I am specialized in Bhajan, Ghazal, Qawwali, Bollywood and Baithak Gana.
The project that I'm
interested in, and in my expertise, is to do two traditional recordings; one
Bhajan and one Baithak Gana.
Bhajan is a type of Hindu devotional music going back many centuries. It can be as reciting a mantra in various basic melodies and rhythms or complex using very intense ragas. For my Bhajan recording I will site some very major poets from the Bhakti movement era (800-1700) such as Surdas, Tulsi Das and Sant Kabir.
Baithak Gana is a form of music originating in Trinidad, Guyana and Suriname by the Hindustani community. It is a mix of Bhojpuri folk songs with other Caribbean influences. This contemporary fusion of genres was created by the Indo-Caribbean people whose ancestors were from Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Bengal and South India area around Madras. The Baithak Gana recording I’m planning to release is a collection of traditional Baithak Gana songs from Trinidad, Guyana and Suriname going as far back as 1833 from when indentured servants arrived in the Caribbean with lyrics depicting scenes of various text such as Ramayan, Bhagavad Gita, Mahabharat, Krishna Leela and Ram Leela.
