An artistic thanks to firefighters

Within sight of San Francisco's Fire Station 22 is a public stairway where a colorful tile mosaic called Hidden Garden Steps will soon be installed. We want to make the fire-red Indian Paintbrush flower in the mosaic a tribute to firefighters near and far.
People who get helped by firefighters often are in the middle of a crisis and don't get a chance to really say, "Thank you." Here's our chance! The mosaic will express our gratitude in a permanent way, so that even firefighters 100 years from now will know that we appreciate them.
Inspired by the awesome mosaic on the Moraga Street steps, we've engaged the same tile artists to install the new mosaic on the 16th Avenue Steps between Kirkham and Lawton Streets. The San Francisco Department of Public Works has done structural repairs, we've applied for city permits, and the artists have started making tiles. We ran a previous successful campaign that dedicated a separate flower in the mosaic to the LGBT community. Now, let's honor firefighters with the Indian Paintbrush (which, by the way, is one of the first flowers to reappear after a wildfire).
The Hidden Garden Steps mosaic is a project of the San Francisco Parks Alliance, and the Department of Public Works named us a Street Parks Partner.

Prizes and tiles

We need to raise $6,955 to cover the costs of the Indian Paintbrush element and the fees of this Indiegogo campaign. Contributors will not be charged unless we meet our funding goal. If all goes well, we expect the entire mosaic will be installed later this year.

A prominent tile in the Indian Paintbrush will display a message to firefighters. And here's your chance to add your own message -- A limited number of people who contribute $150 or more can add words to a tile. It could be your name. A firefighter's name. A message to firefighters. A message to the world. You decide.

Prizes for smaller contributions include some gifts from supportive merchants and artists, such as a $70 bike tune-up at Everybody Bikes; 10 free video rentals at Le Video, or the beautiful art book, "163: The Story of San Francisco's 16th Avenue Tiled Steps."

Be a part of it

This is a grassroots project of public art. Community merchants have donated some of the prizes. The previous Moraga Street steps mosaic has become a destination for visitors, and the Hidden Garden Steps undoubtedly will be, too. People from around the world will see the Indian Paintbrush tribute and know that we value our firefighters. Local firefighters regularly run these steps for exercise, and they'll see this message every time.

You never know when  you're going to need a firefighter. They put their lives on the line for us all the time. Here's a chance to show them we're glad they're there.

Other ways you can help

If you can’t contribute:

  • Help spread the word and make some noise about our campaign.
  • Use the Indiegogo share tools to help you do that.
