 ABOUT AKOSIA

AKOSIA, is a non-profit organization that develops, facilitates and funds summer projects for children around the world.

For the last two summer (2009/2010) the Akosia team was in ACCRA, GHANA working with the students from a school called Street Academy. This month long filmmaking program brings storytelling to life by having the kids write, direct and produce short films. It has been a roaring success! It is an honor for the TKAFoundation to be joining their cause for 2011! To see some of their films from last year, check out our updates page.

TKAF joins them for their upcoming 2011 summer project and hopes to donate portions of her projects proceeds to help these kids!

Sankofa Pictures hopes through her commitment to TKAF, she can help impact the less fortunate and less encouraged in some way through something as magical as art and in turn, help eradicate poverty through arts education.

Street Academy is a charitable initiative that provides basic education for street children who would otherwise not have the option of going to school. Currently there are 80 pupils who are fed, clothed and attend daily lessons at the school. In addition, a further 400 are sponsored. Each summer the school is closed and consequently the students have to find a job to make ends meet. It is not uncommon to find an 8 year old selling chewing gum at traffic lights; and often they will not return to school, becoming a street hawker.

Each summer will be spent on a creative filmmaking journey, involving writing, set-design, costume making, acting and shooting. The aim is to let the children produce the films as independently as possible, providing them with tools and technical skills where necessary. This way, we hope that the children will get the chance to see themselves in a different light and that this will inspire them to become more confident in their creative abilities. At the end of the summer,  a mini film festival will be held in order to bring the community together!

In addition to learning the art of filmmaking, we will organize afternoon sporting and art activities to keep their energy flowing. Our team will work closely with the children in order to stimulate their creativity and imagination whilst also developing a community of trust and team work.

OUR MISSION

Our mission is to provide an engaging and safe environment where underprivileged children’s natural abilities can be expressed and nurtured. We intend to provide a structured platform from which the children can develop their creativity and enable them to produce something that they can be proud of. It is our fundamental goal to broaden a child’s horizon, open their eyes to the possibilities of their own creativity and collective efforts, and to aid them in giving back to their communities.

THE IMPACT

In order to break the cycle, AKOSIA, an organization that would run a cultural summer film and arts program for Street Academy students, was born. The program is designed with the intention of ensuring that these children stay actively involved with their school during the summer and have continued access to food. The Akosia team is made up of a group of dedicated individuals each with numerous areas of expertise: filmmaking, producing, youth life coaching, a primary school teacher, music, writing and acting. Without this activity, the students of the Street Academy will have limit experience ever discovering their talents and lose confidence in reaching their dreams.

We strongly believe that each child deserves not only to be provided with basic necessities but also the chance to develop themselves through a unique cultural experience. By bringing our program to the children of Street Academy, we hope to give them something that will inspire them and send them into the new school year with confidence and hope.
