How can we use our stories to make the world a better place? How can songs build community and create a sense of hope? How can culture fuel our strategies for greater justice?

With your help, A WAY OUT OF NO WAY will answer these questions.

Let me tell you about the project. Here's what we want to do.

A WAY OUT OF NO WAY is a multimedia project documenting my journey and my practice as a cultural worker. In a book and in a series of performances, I will tell the story of my life growing up in Augusta, Georgia.

I will take you to the places where I’ve worked and introduce you to the people who have inspired me. I’ll take you inside my practice, and share the values, principles and methods that define cultural work as I have come to know and practice it.

Jane & children from Springfield, MA sing "There's a River Flowing in My Soul"

Some of my most important work has been with young people. I have listened to them and together we have created a body of songs. These songs tell their stories and capture their reality and their dreams. While people are excited to hear these songs in workshops and concerts, I want to create a songbook so that the songs will not be lost.  We will keep the music and the stories alive for other communities to learn from and be inspired by.

Whether through songs, stories, oral history, choruses, museums and festivals, community-- and building a sense of community-- is always at the center of my work. What I have seen is that when people feel connected they discover in each other new sources of strength, possibility, creativity and beauty.

I have asked my very dear friend Cindy Cohen to work with me on A WAY OUT OF NO WAY. She is someone who understands the deepest implications of my work. The strength of her work in peacebuilding, and in interacting with communities in conflict around the world, brings to our collaboration a shared sense of the possibilities of communities and an understanding of the role that arts and culture can play in social transformation. Cindy directs the non-profit ReCAST, Inc (Re-imagining Community, Arts and Social Transformation) and the Program in Peacebuilding and the Arts at Brandeis UniversityShe is the co-creator of the award-winning film Acting Together On the World Stage.

What We Need & What You Get

We need $25,000 to produce the songbook and continue our work on the larger project for a year.

We will use part of the money raised to finance the production of the much-requested songbook. The funds will cover transcription, background text on each song, design, printing and binding.

The rest of the money will be used to advance the larger project of A WAY OUT OF NO WAY, including costs associated with travel, conducting and transcribing interviews, archiving documents and media, and time for me to write.

Brandeis students are helping me pull together some great Perks to thank you for your continued support. Check them out on the right-hand side! All gifts are cumulative. For example, if you donate $100 you will receive the thank you AND the bookmark AND the cd set.

The Impact

A WAY OUT OF NO WAY will create resources for educators, artists, organizers and community workers of all kinds to learn from the communities, the stories and the songs that have been a part of my cultural work practice.

We hope that a new generation of artists, educators and activists will be more effective in their efforts at social transformation by using the tools created in this project.

The time has come to document my practice, and to offer to all of you what I’ve learned from the courage and creativity of the people who have shared their lives with me.

More Resources & Other Ways to Help

“Jane Sapp is a musical and cultural power. Her work in the field as a cultural organizer is only matched by what happens when she explodes on stage.”
