My name is Ariana Vargas, and I have been working with people affected by cancer for the last three years. During this time I recognized a huge flaw in the system we use to help cancer patients and their loved ones find the resources they need when diagnosed with cancer.
So I decided to change it. I spent a year putting together an extensive database of resources and an even longer period of time organizing these resources into categories that make sense. Today, those resources exist here:
But to have the impact I want to have, I need your help.
What I Need
I'm trying to raise $3,500*. This money will go towards:
$2000 - Homepage video that explains to visitors what the site does
Why: Video is the medium that enables you to tell your story in a meaningful way as quickly as possible. I need to make sure that when an exhausted and emotional cancer patient or caregiver finds my website they understand immediately how it can help them. Video is the best way to do this.
$500 - Flight to Montreal for annual PyCon Conferece
Why: At this conference I'll be able to pitch for funding to help build out MyHealthSensei into a platform that anyone, any age, in any zipcode can access and use to find a personalized list of resources just for them.
$500 - 4 nights accommodation in Montreal
Why: I believe in bootstrapping, but would prefer not to sleep on the street while at the conference
$500 - Dinner for my developers
Why: I have three amazing Python developers who spent weeks working for free to help me get my site to the point of being eligible for the conference. I want to take these guys out to a nice dinner. They deserve it.
*Should I find myself in the very fortunate situation of exceeding my goal, every single dollar donated will go towards enhancing the product.
In today's internet ecosystem, if you want to order Thai food for dinner, you can go on Google and within seconds become an informed decision maker about where to eat through great online tools like Yelp, Seamless, GrubHub, etc.
But when you're diagnosed with cancer and looking for resources that will help you live your life while in treatment, nothing like these services exist. I have built the basics of a service that will help cancer patients in the same way Yelp helps people looking for a bite to eat.
In order for me to build a website that can take your personal criteria into account, however, I need funding. I need to find investors so I can hire developers who will build a product that ensures that a 21 year old female in Chicago with breast cancer is provided with a different list of resources than a 41 year old female in Prairie Village, KS with breast cancer.
By contributing to this fundraiser you can work towards helping the over 1.7M Americans who were diagnosed with cancer in 2012, and what's more you can remove some of the fear that is felt by recently diagnosed patients who are looking for answers and currently have no where to go to easily find them.
Other Ways You Can Help
If you have airline miles or hotel points you can donate for me to use to attend the Montreal conference I would be eternally grateful.
