Have you ever been in a rut before? Felt backed into a corner, unsure of how to wiggle your way out of the unpleasant situation of feeling hopeless. Then suddenly, something happens, something that changes everything?
Well, I know that feeling. Recently, my life took an amazing turn when I had the opportunity to visit Denver, Colorado. It changed everything. Now, I’m ready to push myself completely out of this rut and move in a positive new direction with one goal in mind.
My name is Amanda Lavan and I am a survivor. At the age of 15, I lived through an abusive relationship that stripped away my very identity. Through the love and help of my family, friends and therapy, I have started to heal. This campaign is about taking the next step.
I would like to move to Denver to regain my independence and to seek the knowledge and tools I need to help survivors of rape and abusive relationships.
For the past six years, I have struggled with the aftermath of my own abusive relationship. I have gone from victim to survivor with one thought in the front of my mind; I’d like to help others.
I want to help girls who need guidance after experiencing rape or abusive relationships. As a rape survivor, I am very passionate about helping others and spreading awareness of the unfortunate after effects of abusive relationships and rape. A survivors pain doesn’t end with the attack and sometimes the only way to heal yourself is to reach out. Through my own personal journey, I have discovered the only way I can heal the damage of my past is by moving forward and helping others do the same.
It’s not a simple decision, or one I make lightly, but I believe Denver is the ideal point to start my new life. The abundant public transportation and rich resource of knowledge and volunteer opportunities make Denver stand out. RAINN (Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network), CCASA (Colorado Coalition Against Sexual Assault) and RAAP (Rape Assistant and Awareness Program) are just a few places I would like to start learning and helping others.
I have a good start on this journey; a job waiting for me and a place to live.
What I need from you is some funding for getting to Denver and planting my roots.I need to get myself, my belongings and my beautiful kitty to Denver. With your help, I can move forward in my life. Denver is a new start for me to mend myself, rediscover the people who care about me and to help others in need.
We all need some inspiration. From an email showing how much every thought helps to fresh goodies baked with love; you can have some inspiration of your own to remind yourself of the good deed you've done.
