Our Story

A New Creation Bakery is a bakery in New York City with a mission to produce the best quality baked products, hire the untapped potential in the community of Washington Heights and Inwood, and support the operations of the Love Kitchen (a soup kitchen in Inwood) financially.

This idea was conceived by Jewel Jones, or more affectionately known as Mr Jones. Mr. Jones is the manager of the Love Kitchen, a soup kitchen that serves hundreds of meals to the homeless in the community of Inwood every day. He envisioned a bakery that will provide training and employment for people living under the poverty line in the community, while serve as a source of revenue for the soup kitchen. He wanted to do more for the people he was serving. He wanted to get to the root of the poverty problem.

Captured by this vision, Derrick and a bunch of super talented people started working to make this a reality. Teaming up with Mr. Jones, they created a line of baked goods that resonates Mr. Jones' love for the people and his heart to see lives change in the community. You will believe it when you taste his signature carrot cupcake with orange cream cheese frosting.

Ever since becoming part of Ashoka's Youth Venture program, A New Creation Bakery has been making huge leaps in getting this venture going, but we are still lacking some equipment that will be crucial to the success of this venture. This is where you come in. We are working hard to make this happen, and your donation is crucial to getting this started. Any amount is appreciated. Thanks for becoming part of the movement to bring change to Washington Heights and Inwood!

The Impact

A New Creation Bakery is all about transforming lives and developing the community of Inwood and Washington Heights. We strive to develop the untapped potential in these communities, and help them get out of poverty and unemployment by equipping them with a specific set of skills in the food industry.

Some of you may be wondering: Who do you mean by "untapped potential"? Do you mean the homeless?

Yes, we mean the homeless, except we prefer calling them "untapped potential". More often than not, the word "homeless" creates images in our heads based on stereotypes. We are trying to eliminate that. There are many out on the streets, sane normal hardworking people with families to feed, struggling to make a living. However, due to the lack of education and employable skills, it is difficult to find work, especially in this economy. A New Creation Bakery is determined to bring out the potential of these untapped individuals to help them get on their feet and achieve financial independence.

We also believe nonprofits should spend every single ounce of their energy towards achieving their mission, instead of constantly worrying about funding and whether their grant will be approved. A New Creation Bakery is structured such that all profits will go to the funding of the Love Kitchen's operations, allowing the Love Kitchen to create more programs to help the people of Inwood, resulting in greater impact in the community.

What We Need & What You Get

We are lacking four important pieces of equipment that are crucial to the success of this business: a commercial electric convection oven (priced at $3300), a food processor (priced at $500) and two standing mixers (priced at $350 each). This adds up to about $5000 including transaction fees. These equipment will ensure high product quality and high production yield so that we can deliver better and more products to our customers, accelerating the process of realizing Mr Jones' dream. Hence, we recently took a loan to purchase the most important equipment, the oven. The catch is that we need to pay the loan back before september, so we will really need your help in doing so.

We are happy to receive any amount of contribution, especially since all the money goes to the Love Kitchen, a soup kitchen that is doing some amazing work in Inwood. That means your donations are tax deductible! We have faith that we will surpass our target (because we know we have so many awesome generous friends out there who support us and trust us with their money to help make this world a better place), so we aren't even going to talk about what we do if we fail! Any donations after we hit the 5k mark will go to helping us purchase more equipment that which will help us expand a lot faster. For example, we will need a van, another oven and much supplies as more orders come in.

We are ready to offer some amazing perks to thank you for supporting us greatly. In fact, if all goes well, we will be using the newly purchased oven and mixers to create these perks! There is our signature cupcakes, yummy cookies, discount coupons, birthday cakes and a special membership status we call "Friends of ANC Bakery" that is extremely exclusive and by-invite only! Refer to the perks column to view the perks we are offering.

To all those who do not live in New York City, you are not forgotten. We apologize for not being able to deliver these products to you. So to all out of state donors who contribute $25 or more, expect to receive a package of our cookies in your mail. As for our international donors, shipping internationally is just not possible. However, we will send you a special handwritten card to say a BIG THANK YOU for your support. And when you visit New York City, you will receive a box of 4 cupcakes on us and a bunch of great advice on what to do and where to eat in New York City.

Other Ways You Can Help

We understand some of you are just not financially capable of donating, but we urge you to just donate a dollar. This would help increase the number of funders, which will look good to our potential investors. We are working hard to make this a reality (especially Derrick who has been working 19 hour days to compete with his investment banker friends!), but we really do need the funding to move forward. This venture has so much potential, but without the funds, we will not be able to grow and make a big impact on the community. We cannot thank you enough for your donation.

Then, think of all the people in your life who love cupcakes, love helping people, and love business and entrepreneurship. Write them a short personal email or write on their wall on facebook with the link of our page, and tell them about how you think donating to this cause is a great one.

Finally, don't forget to like us on our facebook page. You can find the link below. This will allow you to receive updates about the bakery easily.
