We are convening a historic Language Justice Gathering with people from around the US who are deeply involved in the intersection of social justice and cross-language work.This is a gathering that has been long desired and a long time in the making, and is an attempt to create a national network of language justice advocates.
What is language justice? We see language justice as a powerful tool to create movements and to create social change: a way to connect people across language barriers. Fundamentally, we believe that everyone has a right to speak in the language in which they feel most comfortable, to understand and to be understood. It is also a commitment to creating spaces where no one language dominates over any other and to building cross-language communication over the long haul.
We all need multilingual movements! Be a part of creating the multilingual world we all want to live in! Can you help us?
Twenty social justice interpreters and language justice organizers from collectives, groups, co-operatives, and organizations from California, Massachusetts, Virginia, Texas, Washington DC, New York, Georgia and North Carolina will be a part of this historic gathering. Groups include: Antena/Antena Los Ángeles, Boston Interpreter Collective, Caracol Interpreters Cooperative, Highlander Research and Education Center, Just Communities, National Domestic Workers Alliance, and Southerners on New Ground (SONG). There will also be a number of interpreters who work independently to build multilingual spaces.
After this initial meeting, we hope that this group will work together to create a more lasting network that can work nationally (and internationally) on language justice. We need to come together to share experiences and challenges, to see what we might create together, and to begin to lay the groundwork for a strong movement.
We want this event to be open to everyone, including people with kids or people with less financial resources. That’s why we need your help!
We will use these funds for transportation to help get folks to the meeting, to get materials, and to provide paid child care for the event. Except for the child-care providers, this is an all-volunteer operation and none of the participants will be paid using the funds we raise. Any funds raised beyond the $3500 will be used to further our work post-Encuentro.
One of our collaborators asked the Wayside Center for Popular Education to host this gathering due to their commitment to multilingual work, because they are beautiful hosts in a beautiful place, and because of their location in the South. The Wayside Center will donate the space to meet and also provide logistical support! But we would love to offer them a small donation as a show of our appreciation.

One benefit of such a network will be deeper collaboration around curriculum development as groups bring in new interpreters. Groups from around the country, including many folks who are attending the convening, have been developing and implementing curricula for “Interpretation for Social Justice” workshops for years. As we all begin creating “Level 2” curricula, this gathering will bring together folks to share strategies, tools, techniques, and creative creations toward the development of that curricula. This will help us to build interpreter capacity across the country.
In addition to exploring ideas around a national network and curricula collaboration, we need space and time to connect with each other and converse about a range of topics, from the nitty-gritty of interpreting (What are folks doing about equipment?) to how we are growing this critical foundation of social justice movement work (What are you doing beyond workshops to support the development of new interpreters?) to how we are listening and learning from communities and adapting our work (What new ideas are there around gender pronouns?) and more.

Estamos organizando una reunión histórica para la justicia del lenguaje con personas de todas partes de los EEUU que están trabajando de manera profunda en la intersección de la justicia social y el trabajo inter-lingüístico. Es una reunión que se ha querido hacer y que se ha incubado desde hace mucho tiempo, y es un esfuerzo para intentar crear una red nacional de promotores de justicia del lenguaje.
¿Qué es la justicia del lenguaje? Nosotros vemos la justicia de lenguaje como una herramienta poderosa para crear movimientos y para crear el cambio social: es una manera de conectar a las personas sin importar las barreras lingüísticas. En el fondo, pensamos que todo el mundo tiene el derecho de hablar en el idioma en el que se sienten más comodxs, el derecho de entender y para ser entendidxs. También es un compromiso para crear espacios donde ningún idioma esté por encima de cualquier otro y un compromiso a crear la comunicación inter-lingüística a largo plazo.

Veinte intérpretes para la justicia social y promotorxs de justicia de lenguaje representando colectivos, grupos, cooperativas y organizaciones en California, Massachusetts, Virginia, Texas, Washington DC, Nueva York, Georgia y Carolina del Norte formarán parte de esta reunión histórica. Los grupos incluyen: Antena/Antena Los Ángeles, El Colectivo de Intérpretes de Boston, Cooperativa de Intérpretes Caracol, Centro de Educación e Investigación Highlander, Comunidades Justas, Alianza Nacional para Trabajadores del Hogar, y Southerners on New Ground (SONG). Además habrá varixs intérpretes que trabajan de manera independiente para crear espacios multilingües.
Después de esta reunión inicial, esperamos que este grupo siga colaborando para crear una red más duradera para hacer la justicia del lenguaje al nivel nacional (e internacional). Hay que unirnos para compartir experiencias y desafíos, para ver lo que podríamos crear juntxs y para empezar a establecer los fundamentos de un movimiento fuerte.
Queremos que este evento sea abierto a todxs: incluyendo personas con hijxs o personas con menos recursos. ¡Por eso necesitamos tu apoyo!
Vamos a usar estos fondos para el transporte para poder ayudar a los participantes a llegar a la reunión, para comprar materiales y para pagar a las personas que van a cuidar a los niñxs durante el evento. A parte de los cuidadores, este es un esfuerzo de purxs voluntarixs y ninguno de los participantes recibirá compensación de los fondos que recaudamos. Si recaudamos más de $3500, estos fondos se usarán para avanzar nuestro trabajo pos-Encuentro.
Uno de nuestros colaboradores pidió al Centro Wayside para la Educación Popular que fuera el anfitrión de esta reunión debido a su compromiso con el trabajo multilingüe, por ser lindos anfitriones en un lugar lindo y por su ubicación en el Sur de los EEUU. ¡El Centro Wayside donará el espacio para la reunión y también proveerá apoyo logístico! Uno de los beneficios de una red como esta va a ser una colaboración más profunda en cuanto al desarrollo de currículos para apoyar a grupos que están integrando nuevos intérpretes. Varios grupos a lo largo del país—incluyendo muchas personas que asisten al encuentro—han estado desarrollando e implementando currículos para los talleres de “Interpretación para la justicia social” desde hace años. Ahora que estamos empezando a crear un currículo de “nivel 2”, este encuentro reúne a todxs para compartir estrategias, herramientas, técnicas y creaciones creativas que ayudarán en el desarrollo de ese currículo. Esto nos ayudará a aumentar la capacidad de los y las intérpretes en diferentes partes del país.
Además de explorar ideas para formar una red nacional y una colaboración curricular, nos hace falta espacio y tiempo para conocerse más y para platicar sobre una amplia gama de asuntos, tanto los detalles técnicos de la interpretación (¿Qué están haciendo en cuanto al equipo de interpretación?) como nuestro esfuerzo para fortalecer las bases esenciales de los movimientos de justicia social (¿Más allá de talleres, qué están haciendo para apoyar el entrenamiento de nuevos intérpretes?) y la cuestión de cómo escuchamos y aprendemos de las comunidades para adaptar nuestro trabajo (¿Hay nuevas ideas en cuanto a los pronombres de género?) y más.
