A is For Acceleration

Fighting back against the War on Women, one A at a time.

A Is For Mission: to serve as an ally and advocate for organizations working to protect reproductive rights; to provide a unifying forum using social media to spotlight issues and facilitate activism.

A is For was an idea borne out of the frustration and fury of the War on Women that consumed the 2012 election season, and has since evolved into a potent, highly visible reproductive rights campaign. Now, A is For is committed to becoming a permanent, vigilant voice for women. We want to lay a solid foundation for a nonprofit that will ensure that future generations will be informed, engaged, and active--and not take their physical autonomy for granted. We are asking you to consider what we have accomplished in 7 months--and imagine we could do with more time and resources. Then please consider giving your tax-deductible contribution to A Is For so we can reach these goals.

“Being an actress is a huge part of me. But it is not all of me. Artists of all kinds have always done what they could to change the world, one story at a time. And as a human being, too, I am part of the story.”

-A Is For co-founder Martha Plimpton / The Hollywood Reporter

With actress and activist Martha Plimpton, “Daily Show” creator Lizz Winstead and others, A is For waged a daily awareness campaign just as relentless as the attacks on women’s physical autonomy. We redefined the iconic symbol of shame, the scarlet letter A, and manufactured “A” ribbons that our members wear proudly. Our organization grew in numbers, Facebook and Twitter followers, page views, ribbons--anything you can count. Founders and members are appearing on MSNBC and the red carpet wearing their ribbons. We are uniting and informing women and men from across the country with our “Nightly Need to Know” posts. We raise funds for the boots-on-the-ground work of organizations such as the Center for Reproductive Rights. We launched our own video campaign with Jane Lynch, Amy Poehler, Sarah Silverman, Frances Fisher, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Talib Kweli and others--known and unknown--wearing the scarlet A, standing up for reproductive rights, and telling the world what their A stands for.

And we're just getting started.

“Sharing these personal experiences is the bond that constitutes the mighty heft of the social media muscle behind the new women’s movement, which I watched executed with glee during the Komen flap, and with pride during the Limbaugh boycott."

-A Is For co-founder Maureen Herman / BoingBoing

Together, through social media, the A is For community watched, tweeted, and wrote on walls as the women’s vote bore witness to what we’d been saying all along: women will not be shamed into silence. It would be easy to sit back with our newly elected representatives and entrust them with the business of protecting women’s bodies from state-imposed violations and humiliations. But we will not make that same mistake again. This is not the time to stop. This is the time to work even harder, because unfortunately, there needs to be an organization that serves as the nightwatchwoman for those legislators who are constantly chipping away at our fundamental physical rights.

"I also believe abortion should be legal in every other case. Like the case of "the future of the mother," or the age of the mother" or "the financial situation of the mother." In other words, in the case of the life of the mother.

-A Is For co-founder Lizz Winstead / Huffington Post

Funds raised by this campaign will be used for, but not limited to:

  •  Supporting and expanding our video outreach campaign

  • Manufacturing our scarlet letter A ribbons

  • Maintaining and expanding our website

  • Developing a database of proposed laws that would affect women's reproductive rights

  • Maintaining and expanding our campaign infrastructure through stipends for writers and researchers

  • Covering labor costs associated with the shipping and handling of our A ribbons

  • Funding groups that share our common goal of protecting women's reproductive rights.

Through the kindness of our supporters, we have some incredible incentives to offer our donors, including VIP tickets to and a studio tour of the Conan O'Brien show, tickets to the Tony nominated play Other Desert Cities and dinner with its playwright, Jon Robin Baitz, and lunch with A is For co-founder Martha Plimpton. Full details for all of our campaign incentives can be found at aisfor.org/our-2012-indiegogo-campaign.

A is For's mission didn’t end after Election Day; it will continue until women’s reproductive choices are no longer held hostage by the agendas of politicians and churches. When the rights to physical autonomy and self determination come under attack, everyone has an obligation to stand up and speak out. Because if you think it can’t happen to you, you’re mistaken. A is For is in this for long haul and we’d love for you to join us. Please give what you can to keep A Is For accelerating.
