ACHIEVE Kids Tri is a Washington, D.C.-based 501(c)(3) organization that designs and implements triathlon training and fitness summer camps for youth between the ages of 9 and 14. Each camp concludes witha city-wide, timed, short-course triathlon race.
Last year, ACHIEVE's largest corporate donor announced it would no longer be able to support the organization. ACHIEVE is in desperate need of additional funding to be able to host this summer's three camps. If we don't reach our funding goal, we won't be able to host camp. Please help us save ACHIEVE's summer camp so more kids in D.C. can realize their potential and the value of an active, healthy lifestyle!
What We Need
ACHIEVE's overall budget for 2013 is over $80,000. This campaign seeks to raise $30,000 (or more!) towards that goal in 30 days. This means we need to raise $1000 per day.
It costs us aproximately $800 per youth athlete in direct costs such as:
- bicycle maintenance,
- USAT memberships and sanctioning cost,
- medals, race-day equipment, and
- coaches to run the program and the end-of-season races.
We also pay aproximatley $400 per youth athlete in indirect costs--primarily a part-time staff person to coordinate everything and insurance.
While ACHIEVE has and will continue to run programs in cities outside D.C., including Waterbury, CT; Atlanta and a working-class suburb of Chicago, because these other locales are largely self-sustaining, the vast majority of funds raised will be spent running the ACHIEVE program at two sites in Washington, D.C. (The other camps will benefit from their pro-rata share of organization-wide items like insurance but mostly raise and spend their own funds locally).
What You Get
To keep our costs low and maximize the amount of your contribution, most of our perks are intended to give you the satisfaction of knowing exactly how your contribution is being used to support a youth athlete. We have linked each contribution amount to what it will be able to buy for a camper. We also have a reward for the overall top donor and, as a special incentive for our local supporters, we are offfering a reward to the top local (DC/MD/VA) contributor:
- Overall top donor: Free entry to the 2013 Nation's Triathlon
- Top donor from DC, MD or VA: Free 4 month membership to Team Z, including a detailed training plan, access to team workouts and clinics, and race support
Your contribution will:
- give a youth athlete the opportunity to feel the sense of accomplishment that comes with reaching his/her goal,
- build a community that fosters hardwork, persistence and self-confidence,
- raise awareness of the importance of a healthy/active lifestyle to combat obesity, and
- ensure all campers learn the lifesaving skill of swimming.
If you have ever trained for a race - whether it was a 5k or marathon, a sprint triathlon or an Ironman, or some other goal - you understand the great sense of accomplishment and joy that comes with achieving your goal. Your contribution will give our youth athletes the opportunity to experience that sense of accomplishment and realize their potential when they work hard to achieve their goals.
For those of you who attended camp as a child, you understand how a camp environment can increase a child's confidence, create a sense of community and build long-lasting friendships. Your contribution will help build a community that fosters hardwork, persistence and confidence in self.
Recognizing the unfortunate fact that minority youth are more likely to be overweight or obese and to suffer negative health consequences, ACHIEVE aims to make regular exercise – including swimming, cycling and running – and healthier food choices a part of each participants’ permanent lifestyle. With your contribution, ACHIEVE staff will teach campers about year-round opportunities to continue to swim, bike and run and how to eat healthy.
Nearly 60% of African-American children and 56% of Hispanic children cannot swim, and African-American children drown at a rate almost three times the overall rate. Many ACHIEVE youth athletes enter camp unable to swim or afraid of the water. Your contribution will help ensure that by the end of camp, all participants are equipped with the lifesaving skill of swimming.
