2000 street dogs and cats will be killed for the Olympic Games in Sochi in 2014

Stop the Massacre of the Homeless Animals in Sochi for Winter Olympics 2014

Mr.Pakhomov(Mayor of Sochi) had clearly stated that it would be in the city's best interest to simply exterminate the stray animal population. He also stated that there has been a prize money issued for every dead stray animal of 800 rubles (~$20).

Please help to stop this massacre!

WE MUST ACT NOW, THERE ARE ONLY 17 DAYS LEFT UNTIL THE START OF THE OLYMPICS. RUSSIAN GOVERNMENT IS EXTERMINATING THESE ANIMALS WITH POISON. THEY ARE KILLING THEM, ALL OF THEM. EVERY DAY WE DELAY, MORE AND MORE OF THESE INNOCENT CREATURES DIE!

Russian city Sochi is allowed to kill about two thousand street dogs and cats for the Winter Olympic Games of 2014.

Animal activists protested for the decision and called for other solutions, such as sterilization.

Also for Euro 2012 in Poland and Ukraine led reports on the killing of street animals to international outrage and even a boycott of the tournament.

A stray dog is seen on the streets of Sochi on Wednesday Jan. 29, 2014. (Peter Akman/CTV News)

“Every year, just in this municipality, thousands of dog and cats are killed. They are shot, poisoned, even beaten to death with shovels or stabbed with knives. They are hit, kicked and just generally abused.

Some of these animals were people’s pets. Dogs or cats that once lived in a home, then for some reason, released into the city.

The other animals are products of the streets. Litter after litter are born. No food, no medicine, no sterilization. Spraying or neutering these animals is expensive. So, most Russians here don’t do it.”

Yesterday, I spoke with two women who spend their days trying to catch these animals. They then get them healthy: fed, cleaned, vaccinated and sterilized. After that, they find them new homes with families across the country. And they do this for no money. They are volunteers.

In a year and a half, they have saved more than 800 animals.

“For Olympic Guests…this is for you!”

But for each one they save, 10 more are killed.

You see, they are racing against the government. Last year, officials announced the city would be killing 2,000 stray dogs in Sochi.

The reason: ”to keep the tourists and Olympic visitors safe.”

The reaction to the announced cull was swift – condemnation from the SPCA and anger from people across Russia and many other countries. So, the killings were cancelled.

But they weren’t really.

A company has been hired to continue “cleaning the city.” Every night between 1 and 6 a.m., traps are set, poison put out and animals are killed.

“What’s the answer?”. I asked.

Animal rights groups have demanded a shelter be built. The government first said no, but it now seems to be considering allowing a private company to run a shelter. Not surprisingly, that’s the same company it hired to kill the dogs during the night.

Many feel there is only one answer – because of a lack of sterilization, most predict even once all the stray dogs are killed the problem will return, and within a year, the numbers would be right back up.

So maybe the Russians could learn something from Bob Barker: “Have your pets spayed and neutered.” And instead of paying companies to murder these animals, the government could put that money to lowering the cost of “controlling the pet population.”

As per the mayor of Sochi himself, Anatoly Pakhomov, during his latest speech on preparations for the Olympic games, he encouraged the city to take action against all the homeless animals by exterminating them. Not only does he think it is OK to involve the people in this MASSACRE, he applause their enthusiasm by rewarding them with 800 roobles for EACH DEAD STRAY. All this is in the name of the Olympics taking place in his city. It is mind blowing that someone would encourage people to KILL and reward them for it.  We strongly believe that there are other methods, less primitive and less barbaric, to take care of the stray population, such as spay/neuter clinics and homeless shelters.

We strongly believe that there are other methods, less primitive and less barbaric, to take care of the stray population, such as spay/neuter clinics and homeless shelters. If the government of Sochi is willing to pay 800 rubles for every dead stray It would only make sense that they are fully capable of opening a shelter and a sterilization clinic.

PLEASE HELP US SAVE THESE ANIMALS. ANY AMOUNT OF MONEY CAN HELP.
