UPDATE: Due to the great last-minute traction we've received, we have extended the giving deadline to February 28!
UPDATE: LISC has pledged a $10,000 matching grant if we reach our goal!
Building Blocks is a new 501(c)(3) non-profit organization founded by 3-time NBA Championship winner and North Minneapolis native Devean George. Building Blocks exists to:
- Provide high-quality, low-cost housing to individuals and families in North Minneapolis.
Produce positive healthy-living programming for North Minneapolis youth.
- Create economic opportunity and a lower barrier of entry for aspiring business owners in the community.
We believe that North Minneapolis can overcome the prevailing forces of poverty and crime to once again become the vibrant, connected community it used to be. We think the way to do this is to create opportunities for the community to provide for itself.
What We Need & What You Get
In July, we will break ground on a revolutionary mixed-use development called The Commons at Penn Avenue. This building, built on the site of an abandoned garage, will provide a home and source of pride for 45 low-income households as well as space for local businesses and community-run after school programming.
In order to make the Commons at Penn a success, we need to expand upon the relationships we already have in the North Minneapolis community and build a strong network of grassroots support. To that end, we are planning several basketball camps and other recreational education programs in the neighborhood to be held this spring and summer. Currently all of our funds are tied up in the construction project, so we need to raise $15,000 by February 15 to fund our operations and outreach efforts.
Aside from the personal satisfaction of knowing your hard-earned dollars are going toward transformative change in a hurting community, we have some great rewards lined up as our way of saying "thank you" to our Indiegogo supporters.
If we reach our goal, it doesn't just mean we get to spend the summer drumming up support in and around the neighborhood. It means we get a chance to build in to at-risk youth at a formative time in their lives, teach and learn important lessons, and leave lasting impressions that will lead to a brighter future.
Other Ways You Can Help
Enthusiastic word-of-mouth support is far more valuable than money, so if you're not in a position to give financially we would be beyond grateful if you would encourage your friends and family to hop on board. When tweeting and posting to Facebook, please include the #15by15 hashtag. Also, like any nonprofit we rely heavily on the efforts of volunteers.
