Short Summary

My name is Randy Grskovic and I’ve been an artist for nearly my entire life. My goal is to consistently make thought-provoking images that encourage people to think beyond what the world is selling them. I want to share these images freely with everyone and I have always been hesitant to sell them. Putting a price on artwork creates a great divide. The art becomes an object, and often in our commodity-based culture, sometimes the meaning or value becomes hidden behind a price tag. What I aim to do is use democracy in a new way. By finding a small number of people who want to become patrons for the arts, I can create a body of work that is owned by all the patrons. Each person who contributes will receive an original work of art for their collection but will also be contributors to a larger compilation, which will be published online for everyone to view for free.

What We Need & What You Get

I’m looking to find 100 patrons who will contribute $100 each to raise $10,000. I estimate to make this body of work it will take 4 months for me to work on full time. Indigogo will take 7% of this goal leaving $9300. I estimate that my material costs to be approximately $2000 and the mail-out of the artwork to all patrons will cost $800. What remains is a $1625 stipend per month for me to create this body of work. I will be actively sharing the images to view online daily. I encourage the continual discussion of the images, because for me, that is what real art is. It is not the object, but the conversation it incites.

The Impact

The kind of patronage I am referring to is not that of a buyer and seller. I hope to encourage a relationship built upon trust that the artwork created as a whole is greater than one piece alone. This trust is based on my previous work and the testimonials of my patrons. The work I am going to be mailing out is valued at $300 on the art market, but to reiterate, the aim is not to sell artwork. What I ask is a gift in trust from each patron of only $100 and in turn I will select a piece from the collection to send to him or her as a gift. These gifts will then create a larger body of work that will be available for free online as a gift for all. This publication’s first page will be a foreword dedicated to the 100 patrons whose names will ever be associated with art patronage.

Additionally, this patronage should not be a limited offer. I have set 100 patrons as a reasonable goal, however, the more the merrier. If you want to contribute more, you can. If there are ultimately 365 patrons, I will continue this project for an entire year. If you want to sponsor patronage for someone who would like to be involved but can’t afford it, I highly encourage this too. The motive of this project is sharing, and a piece of art would make an amazing gift for someone who couldn’t afford it in the regular market.

People who know me and know my work are aware that this type of community building is my passion. Over the past 5 years, I have actively opened my own temporary galleries at my own risk and expense to share art with everyone. I have never charged admission and I have always invited the public. This isn’t about money or exclusive circles; this is an honest expression and desire to communicate with those who want to listen.

Other Ways You Can Help

I am aware that I have a lot of supporters out there. If you can’t be involved as a patron in a financial way, that’s ok. If you believe in a project like this, please share it with someone who may want to be involved. Maybe you know someone who is looking for artwork but doesn’t know where to start. $100 is a small risk for a first time investor in culture.

I encourage everyone to share this idea through his or her social networks, twitter, tumblr, facebook etc. Indigogo would definitely like for you to use their sharing tools as it helps their network and helps me get my campaign to the top of their site. I hope that this idea encourages people to change their thoughts about what it means to support the arts and artists and that it encourages artists to continue to share their ideas with one another. I hope it inspires everyone to think about giving rather than buying.
