It is a major cultural institution in Leipzig and a place where different art-forms meet. The possibilities of interdisciplinary and genre-crossing art-outreach and presentation form the venue's essential, unique feature. The multi-disciplinary nature of the programme has repeatedly enabled new developments in individual artistic fields to be quickly recognised and integrated.

The Schaubühne Lindenfels building was built in 1876 as a dance hall. Schloss Lindenfels was at that time one of the largest and most important establishments in Leipzig. In the historic ballroom one can today still sense the glamour of bygone times.

In 2005 the Schaubühne became a non-profit limited company and thereby started an experiment with cultural-political, social and economic relevance. Germany's first limited company theatre now has around 1,000 shareholders - a public company (the German "Publikum" can mean either "public" or "audience") in more ways than one. With streamlined structures and broad participation, Schaubühne Lindenfels AG wants to be a model for contemporary thinking and action in public cultural life.

With a selective and varied programme, the Schaubühne has built up its unmistakable identity. The secret is the combination of theatrical art, film, music, performance and literature, supplemented by new media and fine arts. In addition to in-house productions, co-productions and guest performances, the Schaubühne conceives and realises projects in public spaces, festivals and retrospectives that deal with social themes and questions, and with the processes of artistic production itself. Discussion forums, exhibitions and salons round off the range of artistic activities.
