I am grieving the loss of my lifetime best friend and fiance, Brye Maiden, to Lupus. He and I, at 23 years old, have struggled with the nature of his illness for seven years until it finally claimed his life.

Lupus is not yet considered a "mainstream" disease. Many people go undiagnosed or misdiagnosed for years; most have no idea what Lupus is or it's affects on the body. Some people I've spoken with even thought there was a vaccine already available.

This lack of understanding and the broken nature of our healthcare system is infuriating.

My fiance attended the Community College of Philadelphia for Photographic Imaging and intended to become a film editor. I am a graduate of Philadelphia's University of the Arts class of 2010 and majored in Screenwriting.
