I was homeschooled in Texas until the age of twelve. At this point, my mom opened a small, radical school based in the pedagogy of John Holt, John Dewey, and Ivan Illich, among others. Only existing long enough for me to graduate high school, “The Skool” (skool being a less formal spelling) offered no traditional classes or curriculum, the students being trusted to their innate love of learning and dynamic nature. I studied mostly wilderness survival, farming, and physics. Later I attended Marlboro College, where I studied sociology and visual art. I think the main thing lacking from my upbringing and education as a youth was involvement in the creative lives of cool adults.
