Director/Writer

I am an independent filmmaker based in Johannesburg. I have directed the television documentary Rockey Street to Recovery (2008); which chronicles writer Melinda Ferguson's battle with addiction against the backdrop of South Africa's transformation during the heady nineties, co-directed the short documentary Two Camps (2008)(with Rehad Desai) which formed part of the Filmmakers Against Racism Series, the South African film industry's immediate response to the xenophobic violence that swept the country in May 2008, and the television documentary The Father Inside (2009)(with Rehad Desai) which follows Magadien Wentzel, reformed member of the 28's, South Africa's infamous prison gang, in his quest to repair his relationship with his children. In 2010 I completed my first feature documentary Citizen X, with which I explored participatory video and collaboration, with activists from three impoverished communities as they mobilised for better basic state services. My work has screened on local broadcasters SABC and Mzansi Magic and at local and international film festivals, universities and outreach events. I am currently in production on the historical documentary series Alexandra! about the vibrant and politically significant 100 year old Johannesburg township, and the collaborative neighbourhood film Jeppe on a Friday, which reveals the diverse experiences of eight people who share a Johannesburg inner city neighbourhood.

I have also, in 2009 and 2011, acted as convenor of the bi-annual People to People (P2P) International Documentary Conference JHB, the only dedicated documentary event of it's kind in South Africa and have been a member of the annual Tri Continental Human Rights Film Festival programming team since 2008.
