I grew up in Kansas, where I began a 12-year swimming career that grew slowly and ended after I joined the U.S. Navy swim team stationed at Yale University. I became the fastest swimmer in the world and was a likely gold medalist in the 1960 Rome Olympics. But some last minute events created unexpected challenges. People have told me over the years that I should tell it as it happened and share the lessons I learned. This is my story.
