Jan Svankmajer

I consider myself a poet rather than a filmmaker. The film is a mean of communication, poetry is singular.

I was born on September 4, 1934. Then I was a child for some time. The stage design and puppetry quickly become my academic passion during my university years. I never studied film or its technology because I believe in open approach to art and poetry, free of any shackles of the technical medium. I started making art in 1964 and haven’t stopped ever since, discovering that tactile phenomena and imagination is the best way to express what I needed. The Insects is my last feature film.
