Backer Guidelines

These Guidelines are part of the Indiegogo Terms of Use. By accepting the Terms of Use, you also agree that these Guidelines apply when you use the platform as a Backer.

To take part on indiegogo.com as a Backer, you need to accept the Indiegogo Terms of Use. Once you do, you’ll get access to the platform features made for Backers.

1. Scope of Use of the Platform

Indiegogo provides services to Backers under the scope and conditions set out in the Terms of Use and these Guidelines. These services include:
  • selecting a Project and a Reward;
  • receiving delivery information about the Project;
  • accessing details about Project content (such as available products, versions, or language options) as provided by the Creator;
  • choosing a payment method and paying in local currency through currency conversion;
  • placing orders, selecting the delivery method, and indicating the delivery address;
  • downloading invoices when offered by the Creator;
  • using the platform’s infrastructure for communication, refunds, and dispute resolution.

2. Using the Platform

You do not always need to be logged in to use Indiegogo Services. You may back Projects and provide delivery details either through a registered account or, where available, as a guest. However, certain features may be available only to registered Users.

The terms and conditions of each Project are set solely by the Creator and remain available until the Project is completed and Rewards are delivered.
  • By backing a Project (during the crowdfunding campaign or through the Pledge Manager phase), you accept the Creator’s terms, including refund and cancellation rules.
  • This creates an agreement directly between you and the Creator.
  • Indiegogo is not a party to this agreement.

Indiegogo may request additional information or documents from you at any time, particularly if there are doubts about the legality of actions or signs of a potential breach of Terms of Use, those Guidelines or any applicable law.

3. Making a Pledge

The collection of funds is carried out in accordance with the rules set by Indiegogo’s payment partners. Information about currently supported payment processors can be found at Indiegogo Help Center here

To make a pledge, you may choose from different payment methods provided by Indiegogo. Please note that some pledges may not be collected in whole or in part for objective reasons - for example, if your credit card expires before the end of a Project and your payment details are not updated.

A Pledge may be submitted either by a registered User of the Platform or without creating an account. However, Backers who do not hold a registered account may have limited access to certain functionalities available on the Platform. Such limitations may include, without limitation, the inability to post comments under Projects, modify or manage submitted Pledges or orders after completion, receive account-based newsletters or notifications, or use selected community-related features.

Creators may refund individual pledges after receiving payment, including the crowdfunding campaign ends (including an express crowdfunding campaign) and during a Pledge Manager phase. However, whether a refund is granted, and under what conditions, depends entirely on the Creator’s refund and cancellation policy. If a refund is issued, the Creator has no further obligations towards you.

Collection of Funds for Crowdfunding Campaigns
  • When using non-instant payment methods, you provide payment details such as card number, cardholder name, expiration date, and security code, and you declare the amount you wish to pledge;
  • Your card is not charged until the end date of the crowdfunding campaign, which is displayed on the Platform, and only if the Project reaches its funding goal - this does not apply to express crowdfunding campaigns in which case your card is charged immediately upon placing a pledge.
  • Indiegogo may pre-authorize your card during the campaign.
  • Until the campaign ends, you may change or cancel your pledge at any time except where you used an instant payment method or where the Project is conducted as an express crowdfunding campaign.

If you choose an instant payment method or where the Project is conducted as an express crowdfunding campaign, you are charged immediately. In such cases, you cannot modify your pledge via the platform. Any cancellation or reduction of the pledged amount must be arranged directly with the Creator.

Collection of Funds for Late Pledge and Pledge Manager Projects
  • In Late Pledge and Pledge Manager Projects, you declare the amount you wish to pledge for a specific Project, and you are charged immediately, regardless of the selected payment method.
  • The exact amount you declare is the amount Indiegogo will collect.

4. Cancellation, Refunds and Delivery

Refunds and cancellations are the sole responsibility of the Creator, under their individual refund and cancellation policy. Before supporting a Project or placing an order, you should carefully review the Creator’s policy to understand the risks involved and the circumstances, if any, under which a refund may be possible.

Indiegogo only provides the platform for crowdfunding and Pledge Manager, and acts as an intermediary between you and the Creator. Indiegogo does not oversee the development of Projects, guarantee their success, or take responsibility for the fulfillment, quality, or delivery of Rewards. By making a pledge you acknowledge that your relationship is solely with the Creator and that Indiegogo is not liable for unfulfilled commitments, losses, or damages arising from a Project.

5. Fees

Using Platform as a Backer is free. However, you should be aware that you may be charged additional fees by third parties, such as your bank for example, for processing your payment or converting currencies. You are solely responsible for paying any such additional fees or taxes connected with your use of Indiegogo’s services.

More information about currency conversion and current fees can be found at Indiegogo Help Center here

6. The Stable Pledge Program

The Stable Pledge Program is a voluntary commitment made by the Creator for your benefit to ensure price stability for pledges during the crowdfunding campaign. It is a binding agreement between the Creator and you. Indiegogo is not a party to this agreement, but Indiegogo may exercise certain rights to help enforce the Program.

Projects covered by the Stable Pledge Program are clearly marked. The Project page will state that the Creator has enrolled in the Program. If such information is not displayed, it means that the Stable Pledge Program does not apply to that Project.

Creator’s Commitment

The Creator guarantees that:
  • the gross price of each Reward (including all applicable taxes and mandatory charges), and
  • the estimated shipping cost declared on the Project page before the campaign launch,
  • will not increase by more than ten percent (10%) after the campaign concludes.

For the avoidance of doubt, the Stable Pledge Program shall not apply to situations where, after a Pledge has been made, the effective price payable by you changes due to circumstances on your side, such as a change of residence or delivery address, which may affect applicable taxes, duties, or shipping charges.

Your Rights

If the gross price of a Reward or the estimated shipping cost increases by more than 10% after the campaign ends, you are entitled to request a full refund of the amount you pledged. Refund requests must be submitted within 14 days of either:
  1. the Creator’s public announcement of the price change, or
  2. the Creator’s direct notification to you, whichever comes first. The Creator must refund 100% of the amount you paid.

Restrictions on the Creator

Within the scope of the Program, the Creator may not:
  • impose additional charges or surcharges after the campaign that increase your total cost by more than 10% of the declared gross price;
  • change the scope or composition of a Reward in order to justify a price increase;
  • manipulate the price or value of a Reward in a way that breaches the Program.

Indiegogo’s Role

While the agreement is strictly between you and the Creator, Indiegogo may, at its sole discretion:
  • require the Creator to provide full refunds to affected Users who submit valid requests;
  • suspend or cancel the Project’s Pledge Manager or Late Pledge options;
  • withhold or delay payouts to the Creator until the issue is resolved;
  • publicly indicate on the Project page that the Stable Pledge commitment has been breached;
  • suspend the Creator’s account or restrict their ability to launch new Projects.

7. Deleting your account

You can delete your Indiegogo account anytime. Deleting your account ends your use of the Platform, but some legal terms still stay in effect (like data, payments, or responsibilities that need to be completed).
Deleting your Indiegogo account does not cancel any Pledges you have already made. Once you support a Project, and the campaign has been funded, your pledge is considered a commitment between you and the Creator. Whether you can get a refund or cancel your Pledge depends only on the Creator’s refund and cancellation policy, not on Indiegogo. However, if you delete an account during an active crowdfunding campaign, any Pledge that you have made during that campaign will be canceled and your funds will be refunded for that Pledge except for express crowdfunding campaigns, where funds are charged immediately and any cancellation or refund will be subject to the Creator’s refund policy.

Even if you delete your account, Indiegogo may keep some of your information. This is only to make sure your pledge can be shipped, payments can be settled, or if the law requires us to keep it.

8. Liability

Indiegogo is not a store. By making a Pledge, you are supporting a Project, not purchasing a product. Crowdfunding carries certain risks, including the risk that you may not receive a Reward, even if the Project is successfully funded.

Responsibility of the Creator

The Creator is fully responsible for the Project, including its development and the delivery of Rewards as described during the crowdfunding, Late Pledge, and Pledge Manager phase. This includes any delays or issues that may affect the Project or the delivery of Rewards. Refunds, cancellations, liability, and warranties are determined solely by each Creator under their own refund and cancellation policy.

Risks and your acknowledgment

While Creators are expected to make reasonable efforts to complete their Projects, they may face challenges or delays outside their control. Before making a Pledge, you should carefully review the Creator’s refund and cancellation policy, as well as the risks involved. By pledging, you accept the Creator’s policies and acknowledge these risks.

Transparency and communication

Indiegogo does not guarantee the outcome of any Project and is not responsible for Reward fulfillment. However, Creators are required to remain transparent, responsive, and communicative - providing timely updates, disclosing risks, and informing you about progress or obstacles that may affect the Project.

Funding and delivery obligations

If a Project is successfully funded, the Creator must carry it out and deliver each Reward by the estimated delivery date; for express crowdfunding campaigns, this obligation applies once funds are charged and collected from the Backer. The Creator is solely responsible for fulfilling these commitments. If the Creator fails to meet their obligations, they may face legal action from you or other Backers.

Role of Indiegogo

Indiegogo facilitates the crowdfunding process but is not responsible for completing Projects or delivering Rewards. This is why any complaints should be directed to the Creator. If the Creator does not respond or the resolution is unsatisfactory, you may request Indiegogo’s assistance. Indiegogo may provide operational-level support (e.g., contacting the Creator, or facilitating dispute resolution).
