Our Story
Hey! Were the Young Unknowns. We are a band of musicians in Brooklyn, NY with roots from Oklahoma, Nebraska, and Maryland, who are working hard on our first EP and could use a little time, love, and tenderness to get us over the finish line!
Meredith Meyer is a songwriter/ musician/ vocalist from Oklahoma City, OK who moved to Los Angeles and played in several bands before branching out into a solo career. Shes worked over 30 different jobs in her lifetime to support her music career, plays a 1974 Gibson L6S, and recently relocated to Brooklyn, NY because she missed the snow.
Her last album, Its Spooky To Be Young, was produced by veteran indie-rock producer Bill Racine (Rogue Wave, Mates of State, Mark Gardener), who is also producing the first Young Unknowns EP! The album and title track video were featured on Virgin America Airlines, and German DJ/ producer Dennis Sheperd recently featured an electronic the upcoming Young Unknowns song Target Practice on his album A Tribute to Life.
Drummer Matt Arbeiter literally bumped into Meredith on the sidewalks of NY, outside the Meatball Shop. Hailing from Omaha, Nebraska, Matt moved to NYC to focus on his music career. After playing music together a couple of times and talking about Midwestern barbecue, Young Unknowns were born!
Bryan Percivall was hanging out on the Lower East Side one night with his bass in tow, and happened to stumble on Matt and Merediths set at Pianos NYC. We need a bass player, Meredith said! And luckily, he happened to be completely awesome.
Ethan Walter also recorded bass on the Young Unknowns EP and has played with Meredith in her solo project. He's also a member of LA's Walking Sleep and has played, produced, and mixed a number of other albums for various LA indie bands.
Our Music
Young Unknowns pull from a lot of different band influences, but musically we try to make the sound all our own. We concentrate on dreamy textures and layers, poignant lyrics, and melodies with driving beats that motivate. We use: guitars, dreamy keys, haunting bass lines, lots of reverb, maracas, crazy pedals, things that aren't meant to be instruments turned in to instruments, occasionally some house-keys, and sounds from actual outer space. We want you to be able to dance, nod, smile, and weep all at the same time.
Why should you care?
Its not easy to be an underdog band these days. The economy isnt what it used to be, the music business is a wilderness, and the days of discovering talent and developing artists have changed.
We dont have all the answers, we dont have a lot of cash, and we dont come from famous folk. But we are really hardworking young artists with a dream, and we believe we have something special in our music. We all have jobs, bills, and responsibilities , but we have all uprooted our lives and managed to dedicate our time, energy, and our hearts to our art and our love of music.
Remember when you were a kid and made out a Christmas list and waited for that shiny bicycle under the tree? Well, were the kids and were Santas elves and youre the Santa that helps us out with a lift in the sleigh! We have fully tracked 5 awesome songs with our producer that are ready to be mixed, mastered, and put out into the world. You have the opportunity to help an endeavor that is not only top-of-the-line in artistic quality, but that also helps out a group of hardworking kids with a dream! Remember your dreams? Lets make dreams happen!
Good music has great power. It has the power to make us feel alive. When we feel alive, we feel empowered. And when we feel empowered, we can do alot more for ourselves and everyone else around us. Think this sounds ambitious for an indie rock band and a 5 song EP? Probably. But every great moment in history started with an idea.
We want to move YOU. And YOU have the power to help us do that.
What We Need & What You Get
We hope our first EP will be just the beginning of new things to come. We are hoping to reach our goal of $6,400 to cover the remainder of recording/ studio rental costs ($4,000), mastering ($600), and duplication in both CD format, as well as a limited number of vinyl pressings. ($1800).
**If we go beyond our goal, that money will be applied to PR (which is costly!) and mailing to help spread the word and get it out into the universe, and into the hands of listeners.
Check out our giving opportunities and see which one is right for you- Every little bit helps! For $13 you could help us out a great amount, have early access to our EP, AND feel good about yourself... or you could buy 1 measly NYC hamburger. Hmm...
