Our Story
I'm Max Dashu, and I've been researching, documenting, and teaching global women's history since 1970, when I founded the Suppressed Histories Archives. For the past thirty years, I've done speaking tours with my visual presentations, on topics ranging from Female Rebels and Mavericks to Goddess Cosmologies (see catalog). I also teach online courses and webinars, and am frequently consulted with research questions about Goddess veneration, mother-right, and female leadership. My first dvd Women's Power in Global Perspective was released in 2008. Over the past year, I've been working on this new movie about the often-erased cultural legacy of female shamans and medicine women, gathering visuals and organizing information. Now it's time to actually put the movie together, and that is where you come in.
The Impact
I constantly hear from women who are longing to know about positive female cultural heritages, about other ways of doing things than the prevalent authoritarian, linear, dominance-based models. We've been taught that women spiritual leaders didn't exist, or were rare exceptions, or insignificant. We've also been told that the shamanic cultures were superstitious, backward, ignorant. Woman Shaman: the Ancients shows the reality, making visible the long and rich cultural record of medicine women, diviners and oracles, trance-dancers, shapeshifters, and
women who journey through the worlds. To experience the beauty and power of these spiritual legacies is medicine for the spirit, especially for all the women who have been pushed down, marginalized and silenced in the name of religion. And it's an offering for everyone who knows the immeasurable value of aboriginal spiritual ways. They are our birthright, however far back we have to go to reach it.
What We Need & What You Get
My fundraising goal is $7000, which represents the sole funding for this movie project. It is needed for software, tech support, acquiring music rights to music, and for sound and video recording. Most importantly, it will free me up to do the months of intensive work needed to format and sequence the images, finish the script, record voiceovers, and edit the visuals, transitions, and sound in Final Cut Pro. Without funding, my last dvd project took a year and a half to complete, but I feel, and others are telling me, that this inspiration is urgently needed. I would like to pour it all out and get the movie out there as soon as possible. It's too early to tell, but may end up being a double-disc project because of the rich abundance of images. I'm unsure how much the music rights will cost, but having culturally authentic sound will immeasurably enhance the experience of these cultural treasures.
Contributing to Woman Shaman is a way for you to vote for media you would like to see. We'll get there through donations both large and small. Everyone will get a public thanks on my website and blog. Depending on the amount you donate, you can receive other benefits including the dvd itself, the Women's Power dvd too, as well as free webinars or consultations.
Other Ways You Can Help
Your help in spreading the word is crucial. Please tell your friends, allies, and interested people about this fundraising campaign to make Woman Shaman happen, by posting it on your Facebook page, Twitter, blog, as well as via email and texting. Please share links for this page, the Woman Shaman trailer, and the Suppressed Histories Archives site. (IndieGoGo has built-in share tools that make this easy.) Word of mouth is great too, especially if you convince friends to make a donation or if you know someone who'd do a radio interview or write an article about Woman Shaman: the Ancients.
