Two men meet in the middle of a bleak, infinitely flat desert. Clinging to the last shreds of their existence, neither character can remember how they got there, or the last time they saw anything – a person, a town, any sign of life.
The film’s layers of metaphor and meaning begin to unfold as the characters warily assess each other. Their conflicting and complementary characteristics reveal the film’s underlying paradox: they both rely upon and threaten each other’s survival. The tense, symbolic narrative becomes further complicated with the revelation that one character is carrying a piece of the other’s soul, though neither person knows it.
This visually stunning short examines the intricacies and contradictions of the human condition. Created by Co-Writer/Director team Greg Tuzin & Brent Bishop, this production was shot on location in 35mm, and brought to life with the support of an amazing cast: Robert Miano (Donnie Brasco) and Dion Derizzo (E.R.), and an incredible crew, including cinematography by Virgil Harper (Tremors, Young Guns II), practical effects by Chiodo Bros (Elf, Team America), and original musical score composed by Paola Prestini and performed by Kronos Quartet (Requiem for a Dream, The Fountain).
Principal photography was completed May 2008. WITHOUT is now entering its final phase of fundraising. Funding will support: sound design and score, color correction, and CG matting to remove mountains from the stark desert location’s horizons.
